Iron Chinned Bangers: Mayorga (Prime) Foreman Tua Abraham Power Punching Boxers: Hearns SRR DLH Hagler Lewis
Off the top my head I don't remember Sosa being visibly hurt untill he was clearly past it. I'm not sure if one can hold the stoppage versus prime Jones against Sosa. I haven't seen Liles fight though. What's the difference in chin department between Briscoe and Sosa in your opinion Russell?
Bob Satterfield. This is one of the hard punching guys Robinson mentioned when laughing with Jake LaMotta and Curt Gowdy when Gowdy asked Robby if he'd have gone for the HW Title after beating Maxim. (And former Maxim rival JJW held it at that moment.) Satterfield is the antithesis though of what Russ is asking for in this thread, a definitive weak chinned banger.
I feel Briscoe had a better chin than Sosa because... He faced a higher level of competition throughout his career. He had twice as many fights as Sosa. He was only stopped once by a great puncher at middleweight, with a perfect, some would say freak shot that Valdez couldn't duplicate in 27 other rounds of fighting Bennie. Similar to Fullmer/Robinson. Sosa was stopped a half dozen times by a variety of fighters. He fought well past his best, but so did Briscoe.
Did I say it was the reality in the boxing game, or did I say it was a cliche? Are cliches always true? Yay or nay?
How hard do you think he hit, relative to other punchers in his divisions history? What happened in his late fight stoppage loss against Sang-Hyun Kim? Also, his beating at the hands of Hearns is one of the most brutal I've ever seen, with the then nearly blind Muangsurin just eating dozens of right hands. I can't think of very many fighters throughout history who could of taken Hearns shots like that. Incredible.
Tyson, Tua, Liston, Foreman, Hagler, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Marciano, JCC, Barerra, Jack Dempsey all iron chinned bangers
Naseem Hamed qualifies if you take into account that the vast majority of his knockdowns were due to his terrible balance and bat**** crazy style.
