Irrefutable proof Jones and Hopkins ducked Calzaghe in their prime

The delusion of Calzaghe haters is similar to the recent delusion of Kell Brook haters.

Both prone to injuries, which admittedly have stalled their career at points, and both not given respect to for their opposition because the opposition wasn't willing to face them- not the other way round as haters tried to fling it.

The fact that guys like Hopkins turned down career high paydays to fight Calzaghe, instead fighting Morrade Hakkar, and guys like Garcia, Khan and Broner won't take career high paydays for Brook should be telling. In fact Brook was going to work on commission v relative no name Jessie Vargas who was the highest profile welterweight willing to step in the ring with him wanted over 4 times his next highest payday to do so, should give the idiots a dose of reality.

Just like when the most dangerous fighter around came calling (Lacy & Kessler for Joe, Porter & GGG for Brook), those guys jumped at those fights and took them in the blink of an eye.

Joe Calzaghe was a fantastic fighter, and Hopkins turned down a career high payday to face him earlier in their careers. There is a terrific poster on these boards called Cuchulain that even had a link that demonstrated such. Having written that, Calzaghe is demeaned by his haters, which isn't fair. But some of his supporters will lie as well to build him up. Joe was a superb fighter and doesn't need some zany supporter lying to build him up. As far as Kell Brook is concerned, I believe he is the best welterweight in the world. Whereas I don't agree with someone getting a title shot while jumping up 2 weight classes, Kell should be commended for his courage in doing so ESPECIALLY since he is moving up to face a killer like GGG. MASSIVE props to Brook.

This is like the old days.

Get Zod back. And where's Mind Reader these days?

    I miss those old debates.

Yes, a few people backed out. But the point is, he was just too good to make 21 defences of the lightly regarded WBO title. We've discussed this hundreds of times.

I'm pretty sure he only had 5 mandatories. Maybe there were more, maybe not. Again, the point is he fought an awful lot of voluntaries against guys who weren't great. (no disrespect intended)

A guy who made that many voluntary fights against average opposition wasn't interested in fighting the best possible opponents, and it's what cost him big fight opportunities earlier in his career. Nobody really knew of him outside of Europe until he'd hammered Lacy in 2006.

You have to face the fact that despite how great Joe was, he wasn't an ambitious fighter. An ambitious fighter who wants the best, does not struggle to make weight in a weak division and make over 20 defences of a lightly regarded belt.

Regarding Ward and Froch, I'm not sure. But we're not discussing those fighters.

A fair post. It's odd how Calzaghe stirs up such emotion in people all these years on.

People seem to lose all objectivity when it comes to ****ysing his career. It's bizarre. The very memory of Joe seems to have taken over some poster's lives.

What we need, is for Sir Joseph to come out of retirement and fight GG.

    Ha!

    Could you imagine?

    The forum would crash.

    Haha
I actually enjoyed the buildup to Calzaghe-Jones.. Too bad it didn't live up to the hype in the ring.

there's old boxing magazines that had full page
ads ran in them by Calzaghe asking Jones and
Hopkins why they won't fight him...

this was when they all were in their prime years!

    :deal

I use to have those mags, got them at the
flea market but sold them at a yard sale...

there was more than the 5 you note.
I will let you correct your mistake
Then you fail to note or maybe it doesn't suit your agenda the relevance of calzaghes fights with woodhall, Reid, starie in all UK match ups against world rated opponent's or that Kessler was a unification as was lacy, you also fail to note that at least 3 of these matches were sub's for opponent's that backed out, or fail to note that thornberry was supposed to be a tune up double bill for the s Collins match up, or that manfredo was a match up made for TV to build interest for a Hopkins match up.
So much you fail to mention

As for so few mandatories as you put it, which is more than you are even aware of, I don't think ward ever had any in something like 7 smw title fights or fought any undefeated champs, or top prime fighters

Still I guess you would want to ignore all of that?

I think a few people were shocked at how open and accessible Roy was.

    He gave some good interviews.

    I love HBO's 24/7 series.
