I've heard this floating around the forums a lot. People say that Pavlik, the number 1 middleweight, would struggle against any top 8 super middle. I'd like to know how people came to this conclusion. What evidence is there? There is evidence against this argument. Andrade, who is a top 8 swm, did not look impressive against Yusaf Mack. Bute, who is the #3 super middle, was getting tagged a lot against Berrio and got his chin checked. Miranda knocked out Porras at 168 four rounds earlier than Kessler and three rounds earlier than Froch. Oganov, who was ranked top 20 by most people, got completely outclassed and tkod by Zuniga in an IBO smw title fight. Pavlik disposed of Zuniga in 9 rounds.
top 6 vs top 6: Calzaghe>Pavlik Kessler>Taylor Bute<Abraham Lacy>Sturm Miranda>Castillego Mundine>Sylvester no contest, really
Besides Kessler and Calzaghe though? Listing the top 8 people side by side isn't really a good way to compare divisions as well.
Top suppermiddles 1. Calz 2. Kess 3. Bute 4. Mundine 5. Inkin 5. Froch 7. Bika 8. Lacy 9. Andrade 10. Jean Pascal Miranda is now at SMW, so is Zuniga, Brahmer, Berrio, Tsypko, Manfredo, Stieglitz, Codrington, Green, Soliman, Direll. who fill out the top 20 at middleweight we have 1. Kelly Pavlik 2. Arthur Abraham 3. Jermain Taylor 4. Roman Karmazin 5. Felix Sturm the rest of the names are even less worth mentioning then the 11-20 i mentioned for SMW apart from the top 3 who, would IMO rank with the top 5-10 at SMW, the division is total ****. Roman Karmazin is good but he is small at MW. Suppermiddleweight trounces middleweight
the top 6 of the supermiddle division is a lot better than the top 6 at middleweight. Middleweight has really been barren since Hagler/Leonard/Hearns/Duran/Barkley days. Supermiddleweight was too, but right now it has a lot of talent. Middleweight had: Hopkins- went to 175 Taylor- went to 168, and lost Pavlik- good, young champion Abraham- good, best win is a questionable victory Sturm- overprotected and who else? Sylvester? The fact that 40 yr old Castillejo is not only in the top 10, but that he won a belt shows the lack of depth at middleweight. Super middle has: Calzaghe- solidified as an atg Kessler- great, young fighter, won two belts Bute- great prospect Lacy- ex titlist, young, has some solid victories Miranda- i think will be much better w/o having to starve himself down to 160. Froch- good prospect, unproven plus guys who are one victory away from the top fights, like Bika, Codrington, Green, etc.
Ok. The SWM division as a whole definitely looks better than MW. My question now is why Pavlik would get put below Bute, Mundine, and Froch, but I guess that's for a different thread.
thank you illmatic. the ring rankings as they were last month ? miranda moved up i suppose i am more familiar with most of these than most sturm is not really himself since his loss to castelljo . it all started with him being booed for following corner instructions in his fight with masoe and he is only effective as a hit and move runner which he should get back to. abraham is a lot lot better than many in america make him out to be. he is actually better than he actrually looks in that his strength/will to win/ boxing skills/power are all a bit underatted and as a whole package he is a hard man to beat. castilljo, is a good warrior and is rematching with carrera but is long in the tooth and i think carrera beats him. syvester is a 5.7 powerhouse marvin hagler frame type that fights like cory spinks. i exaggerate, he is an ok fighter/double arm guard/peekaboo jab and right cross style ,buit imo euro level only. askainen is not a bad fighter /about 6.0 box fighter but once he was hit on the chin he had very poor recuperation powers and will not be a champ IMO. carrera is the dark horse. tall and long argie/good fundamentals/stays in the pocket and can fight from range/not great at any one aspect but good at lots. decent top 10 fighter needs more exposure. C C 48 Kelly Pavlik 32-0 (29) 1 1 130 Winky Wright 51-4-1 (25) 2 2 141 Arthur Abraham 24-0 (19) 3 3 229 Jermain Taylor 27-1-1 (17) 4 4 84 Edison Miranda 28-2 (24) 5 5 215 Felix Sturm 28-2-1 (12) 6 6 68 Javier Castillejo 61-7 (41) 7 7 116 Sebastian Sylvester 27-2 (13) 8 8 74 Amin Asikainen 22-1 (15) 9 9 10 Mariano Carrera 31-4 (22) 10 10 2 Randy Griffin 24-1-3 (12)
You forgot Allen Green. He's one of the most dangerous guys out there. Forgive him for fighting like a ***** against Miranda. That **** won't happen again. Either way, I agree with just about everything you say, but I'm not so sure Lacy is better than Sturm considering his injury. We'll have to see though.
Pavlik could beat everyone in that division except for Kessler and Calzaghe, AT THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER. He would also have trouble with Mundine. Taylor is still a live dawg too and he something to prove.
Yep. 168 has seen titlists willing to step up to the plate i.e. Lacy and Kessler. They built themselves up, were undefeated, won two belts then fought the BEST opponent. 160 is full of fakes like Sturm and Abrahms. Good fighters but scared of becoming a somebody. You know, daring to be great. Don't you think Lacy and Kessler could have lived off of the trash that Sturm and Abrahms are. I think they could. Instead they took real risks. Maybe I'm being harsh as 160 has Taylor (a real fighter) and Pavlik (another real fighter). The only other real fighter was Miranda but god was his game whack.
