is 3 miles in 18mins a good target for a beginner's cardio?

3 miles in 18 mins is pretty fast.I can do 3km in about 14mins and 4km in under 20 but it takes me some doing.Im not out of shape,I work out most days but I dont think I could do 3 mile in 18mins even if I really pushed myself. It dont sound a good time for a beginner to be aiming at.I suppose age could be a factor.Im 37,I imagine I would have been faster 10 years ago.

I'm a heavyweight and that's very good for a beginner....

If you weigh like 140lbs you should be able to do that fairly easy after a couple weeks.

lol if u manage 3miles in 18mins on a regular, u shud think about running middle distance an i aint kiddin ya. being able to do that for boxing? i appreciate getting fitness, endurance and stamina up but i think ur friend should show u that he can do it, if he can, try running with him. it'll help push u on and give great incentive as well as encouragement when u see ur times start to fall. anymore info i can give, lemme no, i used to be middle distance runner (800 & 1500m). gud luck but ask them to do it first.

I don't see why they gave you time limits, since you are not going into cross country running, but looking to improve boxing endurance.

I say, just go out there and run, progressively building the distance and speed. Use uphill and downhill runs.

It doesn't have to be one continuous run, but you can do intervals of 3-5 minutes of faster running, and about 1 minute of slow jogging or walking. Vary your speeds. This simulates the demands of an actual fight, which are to work for 3 minutes and rest for 1 minute.

At that pace he would have won the 10,000 metre commonwealth games.

And probably been close to taking the world record.

Most boxing trainer's won't teach you boxing until you've demonstrated a capacity for conditioning. It's the hardest, most boring part of training for any sport and he's not gonna waste days of his life training you until you prove that you can handle it. Also, how can he teach you to box if you only have the stamina to train for <3 minutes at a time. Back with my trainer it was jumping rope, you had to be able to jump rope for six three minute rounds with one minute's rest and 10 push-ups between each round before he would let you spar or do mitt-work. You might luck-out and get taught a 1-2 on the heavy-bag if you showed up and showed you were trying but that was about it.

Good policy in my opinion, gets the lazies out the door early and lets him focus on folks who are serious.

If you try to fight without putting in road-work, jumping rope, or other "boring" conditioning exercises equivalent to those, then you will spend more time puking than fighting.

I can't tell you what a good run is..I'm not very fast. I preferred longer slower distance runs. You do have to realize that you won't do all of your training under the supervision of your trainer, you need to work and run on your own, not just put an hour in the gym with him a few times a week.

18 min for 3 miles is a very good time, I'd say it would take a few months of regular running to get down to that time.

The last time I ran 7 miles I did it in 20 minutes so Dodson is not so impressive, I had on one of those helmets with the beer tins and double straws as well, so I could probably top that time if I had to.

So he's averaging 4 minute 15 second miles over 7 miles? If that was the case, he would have beaten Mo Farah in the European Championship 10k this year by a good couple of minutes. :rofl

This, anyone who says you should be able to do it, ask yourself, can u? Probably not, that's very hard! Bruce Lee says u should aim for 2miles in 12min.
