is 3 miles in 18mins a good target for a beginner's cardio?

Some weeks you get that especially at those parkruns. If there's a big county cross country meet in the afternoon most of the best of runners are doing that. Anything below sub 17 will win you a 5K more often than not, although the parkruns are usually a little bit faster and flat.

Plus it was cold/snowy as **** as yesterday which I'm sure contributed to the 'slow' times. Have to check again but I'm pretty sure the winner was a minute of his pb.

    Go for it.

If you used to run a fair amount and used to be in that sort of 'running shape' not to mention a fit ******* through boxing/mma training then I don't really doubt you tbh.

The truly talented will run a mid 16 based of playing 5 a side's a few times a week. That doesn't contradict what I'm saying though, the very elite could sit around all day drinking for 6 months and still go and set a course record at one of those parkruns.

At the same time a 18 minute 5K takes a degree of talent, it's out of range of most of the population. The guy who can do that time ''after a few weeks'' really ought to be running low 15's at the very least after a couple of years. There's runners I know who no matter how hard they trained will never run that time (18 minutes). I got my heart set on breaking 2 minutes for the 800m next year, but I know that will be my very limit. You could have me sponsored by East Germany and sent away to Kenya for a year and I'd still never get to national level let alone world elite.

    Sorry mate that's rubbish.

My local athletic club runs a monthly 5K time trial, there is a vicious hill slap bang in the middle of it that goes on for about half a mile. None the less it's accurate 5K and has been going on for just over three years. On average it will get atleast 40 people at the minimum turning up to run it. Over 36 races with generally different faces among the crowd each time so alot of runners have done this course.

About 25 men have broken 18 minutes*. I don't think any woman has broken 18 on it. About the same number have run between 18 and 19. After that there is nearly 3 pages of times/results. About 5/6 runners have broken 17 minutes on this course. I've seen the level of fitness of the guys running between low 17 minutes on this course and believe me it's something way beyond what your average young fit/active man could understand.

These are guys who run a 50 second 400m or back in the day would win a county cross country meet. The 3/4 or so guys who have run low 16 minutes are either sub 2hr 30 minute marathon runners or national standard middle distance runners, e.g. not far of 4 minute mile shape.

You may well be capable of sub 18 mate, plenty are but your statement that most could do it is a load of rubbish simple as.

    Okay, first things first.........

By way of clarification, my post with the "testosterone" comment was in response to the poster above me, who asked why people here feel the need to bring other down. It had nothing to do with my belief about who can run an 18-minute three mile.

Secondly, I'm afraid you're offbase in your assertion that anyone can go out and run a time like that, even with the proper training.

It isn't a question of being young and fit; in order to do that you have to have some pretty good genes and train appropriately. The idea that anyone can hit that mark with enough training simply isn't true, and never will be. I'm sorry, that is just a fact.

If you can show me a set of race results in an open 5k where more than 10% of the runners (if that much) are running 18:30's or under, by all means post it up. If you can, then you must live in Kenya or something.

I'm not trying to suggest that it takes an elite to accomplish this; elite level would be roughly anything under 14:00. I also have no doubt we all know someone that can run that fast (18:00). I know several, actually. That should in no way, however, suggest that just any old person with a pair of shoes and some gumption can do it. It doesn't work like that. Those people are GOOD runners, unusually good. You need a certain genetic gift to be able to hang those kinds of times.

3 miles in 18 minutes is nothing to do with genetics in my opinion. Anyone who trains hard and right can do it. Most won't but that has nothing to do with genetics and more to do with how they train (assuming they are young and healthy).

I don't have great genetics when it comes to anything athletic. When I played football (soccer) I was always told i was not fit enough. I then started training seriously and managed to improve. I see the genetic excuse on this forum far too much.
