150k for a PPV debut is certainly decent. Plus it was a pretty good show so one can expect the numbers will only grow big. I mean Cotto did 300k with a huge name like Martinez, what would he do vs Lemieux?

A little inflation is common, so I wouldn't begrudge you if you took them with a grain of salt....the lowest number I've seen that seemed plausible was 125k.

The 97k rumor came out way too early in the process to be an accurate final estimate.

it was 97K....the 150 was nothing more than a preliminary estimate. ggg is not a ppv draw. that's not a hit against him. not everybody can be a ppv star, like andre ward said. nobody in the mainstream gives a schit about ggg...he's not particularly charismatic or accomplished and he's already 34 he's got nowhere to go but down.

Didn't the 150k number come out just a day or 2 after the 97k number?
    :think

In any case, without an official announcement from HBO, on principle, I'm not apt to take a promoter's claim on his own fighter as gospel under any circumstances.

    That's a pretty stern standard.

When was the last time 10 million Americans watched a boxing match, period?

Pretty sure you have to go back to Tyson-Mathis Jr on Fox from the late 90s for something like that.

It was a few days afterwards, as were the 125k rumblings.

That's all it takes- it's not dissimilar than movie box office reporting in that regard. :good

I recall the two claims being a day or so apart, but concede I may be incorrect.

Either way, I always thought that, based on projection's, G's people almost certainly used the ceiling of those estimates, whereas the initial claim was either the average or the floor. So take the 97k and the 150k, and if the truth is somewhere in between, the 125k seems in tune with both estimates.

But - again - we will never know for sure without word from HBO.

At the end of the day, it's silly to nitpick over a mere 50k buys. When people are doing that, you know he fell way short of the mark some were optimistically anticipating.

it was the 150K number that came out first...about 5 days after the fight. a couple of days later 97K as announced. In order to avoid the embarrassing revelation of the low ppv #s, ggg's people latched on to the higher 150K. but as you noted, nobody has come right out and said he got 150K....that's because everybody knows he couldn't even crack 100K.

I don't know how uncommon it is for HBO to release numbers, but as previously stated, I'm fairly certain that if/when they do make official releases, they have a legal obligation to report accurately.

150K for 2 non American fighters isn't all that bad during a year that had the worst PPV mega fight letdown in PPV history. People are just angry that GGG can easily outbox a boxer and are looking to trash him any way they can.

The 97K number came from Fight Hype if not mistaken. How the heck would they know exactly? They are one of the biggest anti-light skin colored boxing website.
