is a fighter's nationality the most important thing for you to support them?

I can watch and appreciate fighters from any background.

I find myself more emotionally attached to British fighters in general simply because there is more chance that I have seen a lot more of their fights, seen their careers develop, etc.

Nothing more to it than that.

Point taken, but I think my point still holds weight -- true fans appreciate the skills and don't make nationality an issue.

What's funny to me is that the two big fights recently where the fighters and the promotion company are trying to create a country vs country rivalry (Floyd, Hopkins) are not even very well liked in their own countries. Being a **** talker does severly limit your fan base. Tuning in to see your fighter win and tuning in to see a talker get beat up are two different things. I think people are trying to be like Ali but Ali was hysterically witty and very intellegent.

 

its not the be all and end all, i can look forward to a fight for weeks which include two foreign fighters and I would enjoy not supporting either or picking one foreigner over another, depends ont he fight and the fighters.

I do like to see the British boys do well though and would support them 9 times out of 10.

 

Ethnic pride will usually always play a role but true boxing fans must consider the facts before we consider race; Though denying the fact that race does grasp a good portion of ones support is quite dishonest. As long as a fan is rational in his reasoning I can dig a bit of ethnic pride, everything in moderation.

I don't think nationality or ethinic background is really anyones entire basis for supporting a fighter, but to be honest when I see a young PR up-an comer it does catch my attention a bit more than anyother young fighter. That being said I have to like the fighter before I support them, but I would say I am more drawn to PR fighters. Thats not to say I don't like boxers of other ethnic backgrounds or nationailties. I love Mosely, Pavlik, and Pac. I really like berto, Edison Miranda, Calzaghe, and Corrales R.I.P. I mean as a fan of the sport in general I follow many fighters, but a fighter being from PR peaks my interest a bit more.

 

No...nationality, color of skin, etc. is not a significant factor if you look at my favourite fighters. They come in all shapes and colors from different corners of the world.

 

I think the boxing industry as a whole is actually guilty of creating "race wars". There is always talk of the wars fought between Mexican and PR fighters. And even way back in the day when the country was widely segregated they talk of "colored" fighters VS white fighters. The fact that most of the fighters coming up through the ranks go on to represent their country in the olympics also plays a big role in implementing race/nationality into the sport. While I do think race/nationality play a role in fans support of certain fighters I don't think it is solely what most real fans concentrate on although I do feel the sport in it self is somewhat responsible for it.

 

This is like the olympic games where you support your guys, the ones who represents your country. I don't see anything bad with that at all, BUT saying that mine is or are the best and the others suck is denying the reality that the one who wins is because is a better team/guy/whatever.

So the problem is not the support but being an ******* about it is.

 

My favorite fighter is Calzaghe and I'm from NY. I think the nationality thing is greatly exaggerated on this site. Some people definitely lack a sense of humor about it though.

 

I just like watching good fighters fight. I am an african american but I love watching fighters like Calzaghe, Morales, Cotto and so on and so forth. Some people will base it off of their nationality but when you see a good stand up fighter you can't help but take notice. I would hope.

 

I on the other hand am the opposite. It's because of the nationality that I got into the sport, not the other way around. I love being Filipino, thus I love boxing because we can excel in boxing. If Filipinos didn't box, I wouldn't even care for boxing. So yes, I put nationality as a big case for me to support a fighter. And that is as honest an answer as you can get.
