I have a feeling that this is a fight that HBO wants to happen. I have not finished forming my thought on this match up, and tentatively feel that this is not a fight I want to see at this moment in boxing. Just wondering what some veteran posters think about this match (pros and cons).
Not yet. Kelly has to beat someone with a pulse first. Martinez or Williams, which shouldn't be too much of a problem. If he can't beat them, he doesn't belong in the ring with Bute. If the fight does happen down the road, I wonder if the promoters can find a neutral venue in the northeast that could attract both fan bases. That would be fun.
Bute and his team want to fight Pavlik really really bad! They want to use him as a stepping stone to move Bute into the American market. They had serious discussion about making a fight. HBO showed great interest for it. But Pavlik didn't want to move up just yet. Perhaps later this year or in 2011.
Neutral venue? I don't think so... Bute draws 16,000+ every time out at home... What did Kelly draw in Youngstown last time? ... 2500? I don't think this fight is happening anyway... but I'm just sayin' ... Bute/Pavlik could sell 25,000-30,000 seats [or more] at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. where else can they do that?
From what I heard Bute and his team are willing to fight Pavlik in the USA. They talked about Madison Square Garden as a possible venue.
Wow!... that would be the right way to burst onto the US scene. But, imo Pavlik's people would be NUTS to consider this fight right now. An undefeated, awkward and unothodox athletic southpaw with speed, size, power and MOVEMENT... :think Sounds like a bad choice for a guy trying to re-build his floudering career. :nono
problem is,nobody know bute here..the start in the u.s is kelly, not bute..and also his fights in ohio, are only against poor competition,if he fights martinez it will sell a lot,not because martinez, but because pavlik..bute will only sell in montreal......bute vs pavlik in vegas for sure will sell!
Bad timing for the fight, I feel. Pavlik is at a low point and needs to get his footing again before trying to tackle a higher weight division, particularly against a good fighter like Bute.
I agree. Bute is no way to try to get back into it after Espino. Martinez or PW, then, if KP looks good, then consider this fight. It's probably a better idea to take on someone who doesn't represent such a stylistic nightmare like Bute when/if KP moves back up. Maybe an Andrade or Froch or, dare i say it....... AA?
If they fought today, I'd pick Bute to stop Pavlik in 9-10 rounds. Say what you will about Zuniga and Andrade, but those two guys are about as close to un-knockout-able as fighters get, and Bute stopped both in 4 rounds. However, Bute/Andrade II was such a short fight that we do not really know if Bute has solved his problems with pressure fighters. In my opinion Pavlik's only real chance would be to just keep grinding out the rounds, stay on his feet, and hope Bute gets tired. The above is based on what I think would happen right now, if KP went into the fight as a blown up middleweight. If he moved up the right way, and took out a good southpaw, and a legit contender at 168, I might change my assessment. There is really no hurry to make this fight. Given the right build up it could be HUGE.
To be fair I'd favour a Bute UD, Hopkins proved that with good movement and skills Kelly can be made to look pretty bad, something I think Bute has. Kelly may go down in the fight but so far he's took some decent shots against good/great opposition and not been stopped yet.
