From 97-04 winky was a superb lmw only dropping highly contentious decisions to brown and vargas.

His style was impossible to solve and difficult to look good against. Arguably having a run of 14-0 with 4 by way of knockout he was well conditioned to guy the distance and had enough pop to gain respect.

Today the lmw division is one of the most fractured, but it does seem to be heating up a bit.

If prime winky was around today, assuming politics don't get in the way of fights, is there an active boxer today that can beat him? Not a bs decision but a clean, controversy free, victory.

I think Winky is possibly one of the most under rated fighters in the last twenty years. Although if you were being cynical his three big wins were against a guy who was not a light middle and against guy who he fought at middleweight.

I really don't know who would win in a fight between him and Sergio, if it was the Winky that beat Mosley first time round I mean.

No, I don't think so. I tend to think Winky is an ATG at 154 though so what do I know.

Definitely no now that I take that into account. Winky's impregnable defense and beautiful southpaw jab are going to give hell to anyone. He could be beat but it's not going to be easily, it's going to be close at best to even top tier fighters. I don't think anyone at 154 today can do it. Cotto gets totally out-muscled by him and he's the only one in my mind who has the technical skill to come close to out-boxing Winky.

At 154 no. 160 maybe Sergio or Golovkin. Just because he was a defensive fighter didnt mean he wasnt strong he was very strong and physical actually. He wasnt a volume puncher, but wore down people with his powerful jab. A Winky-Cotto fight would of been fun, but Winky decisions them all Canelo, Lara, Angulo, Bundrage, Cotto, and possibly stops Kirkland. Oh, and even tho Im a Pwilly fan prime Winky would of beat him too.

Wink is a H2H nightmare for just about anyone.

Winky being a strictly defensive fighter gets passed around way too much as well, he always brought the fight to his opponents. Like a walking tank.

Agreed. Even if you can beat him you're going to look bad doing it too.

I can't see it. He's one of the more under rated guys in the last 10 years or so. Not the most talented guy but he figured out how to hit and not be hit.

His fight with Vargas is great.

Winky vs. Tito is one of my favorite fights, pure dominance.
