Is Adamek a national hero in Poland?

    He lives, trains, and fights exclusively in the US now, and hasn't fought in Poland since 2004.

    How much is he revered in his home country?

    Many poles recognize his name, but the name that really strikes home with the poles is GOLATTA.

    I have spoken to poles who said they didn't like that mental case quitter.

    Ok here it is.... Adamek fought in poland against golota in Oct 2009. It was the largest boxing tv event in their history. I'm pretty sure everyone watched that fight that night, I know my old grandparents even did haha. Ohh and yes he is a national hero there. He says he likes it here because he isn't so well known and he can focus on training. In poland he can't go anywhere without being recognized and cheered on. This fight vs vitali will be the biggest event in Poland until euros 12'. The stadium will be sold out and the streets will be filled with poles. I can't wait for this fight!

    Biggest fight in Poland was Gołota-Tim Whiterspoon
    Adamek is just very well known in Poland, he isn't like Pacquiao in Philippines:D:D at al

    he is loved by polish people i know because i work with like 7 of them in work and theyve even offered me to come with them to the klitschko fight cant wait

    He's huge in Poland, I wouldn't put him on Pacquiao in the Philippines level, but he's famous and extremely popular.

    Ok, I'll tell you how it is as I actually live in Poland.

    For a non-boxing fan or a casual fan he's about as popular as Diablo Wlodarczyk. :lol: Seriously, Wlodarczyk is on the TV all the time, most of his fights are in Poland and even though Adamek is waaaay better he's not really that much more popular.

    The Golota phenomenon was something different, he appeared out of the blue and was simply the first successful Polish pro boxer. Unlike Michalczewski, he wore the national colors against Bowe as if he was in the Olympics. He was our guy fighting the best of the larger than life 90's hw division, it was mindblowing at the time.

    There are/were some true heroes in Polish sports whose names are known by everyone but Adamek is hardly one of them. Sure, he's very popular but nowhere near what the Polish-Americans on this forum would have you believe.

    He is a solid top10 sportsman in Poland, when considering popularity. If he wins in September he will be a national hero. Now he is not. Just a top class sportsman, but he isnt close to our's heroes: Malysz, Kowalczyk and Kubica.
