Referee instructed him to. He didn't.

Getting dropped and beaten up by a 37 year old heavy bag on legs boxing novice with a gammy knee is probably worse.

You don't just stop punching your opponent, or decide to gas, because your dad says you're winning.

    Even Fury isn't that unprofessional.

 Is that the one where Cintron jumps out of the ring, right? Like a flying leap between the ropes or something?

There there have been bigger quitters in Boxing like those feigning injury to get out of a fight, Hopkins v Allen first fight (got away with that one) Hopkins v Dawson first farce,I mean fight and then the cherry on the cake,Hopkins being knocked clean out of the ring off Smith in round 8,landing on his head and shoulders and blaming an ankle injury for not being able to continue as well as saying he was pushed .

Not the most embarrassing in history but as it was meant to be the fight that showcased Joshua to the US and he was humbled by a fat Mexican it was certainly embarrassing enough. That Joshua never bothered returning to the US says a lot.

Duran quitting against Leonard is worse. Most people have him in their top 10 all time.

Everyone else now gets a pass

I came to say this exact same thing, imagine being the first heavyweight champion from your home country and then being so unprepared, that was much worse.
And historically speaking you will struggle to find anyone who had such little regard for their first title defence, imagine being world champion with that attitude.
I can see the argument for it being a quit but I can also see how there was no way back and it would only be worse. He was knocked down 4 times and he knew he never got his bearings back after the temple shot.
    Rigondeaux was worse against loma.

If this was anyone else other than Hopkins they would would have been widely mocked and ridiculed for those pathetic and desperate antics.

Did he make a conscious decision not to and was he comprehending the ref?
Judging by his severely glazed eyes he looked like he was on a different planet to the ref to me.

He reacted fast enough when the ref waved it off, and he still spat out the mouth guard. The man quit, and didn't go out on his shield.
