Let's see: Alexander Povetkin has the following disadvantages: 1) 8 inches shorter in reach. 2) 5 inches shorter in height. 3) 22 pounds lighter in average weight (not even including functional weight, such as excluding weight in the form of fat) 4) 10+ years older in age. 5) has 26% lower knockout record. Has there ever been a heavyweight, that beat the top heavyweight with that many disadvantages at such an old age when he was way past his best / prime and was pretty much washed up / shot? If Povetkin beats Joshua, that'd be an unprecedented victory. He'd be far surpassing the accomplishments of past heavyweights like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Who, by the same age were losing embarrassingly to total scrubs like Danny Williams, Kevin McBride, John Ruiz, middleweight James Toney and etc. Whilst Povetkin has already proven to be a level above those guys by being able to beat David Price and not losing to Price at such an old age. Beating Joshua will simply put him astronomically above those guys. In reality, if we hold every heavyweight to the same standard, Joshua should literally be expected to beat Povetkin in one sided fashion with 0 difficulties. But if he doesn't, or even loses, then would that Prove Povetkin is just one of, if not the most special / exceptional heavyweights ever? Or would that instead prove how poor Joshua is compared to past heavyweights? Or would it be a combination of both those things?
You forgot that Povetkin is olympic gold medalist and still top 5 fighter in the world. Its not really upset if he beats Joshua.
Obviously not. I really don't see this massive poo-pooing of povetkin that OP seems to think is going on Any aj-pov thread is seems to be split pretty evenly. I have povetkin as an underdog due to age and I think AJ has improved from the klitschko fight and will evolve past the parker fight. But im not saying this is a one sided fight, povetkin has risks, hes the much better schooled boxer and his shorter height makes him a real danger at close range. Joshua will have to play it smart for the first 7-8 rounds behind the jab and turn up the heat after that. But joshua doesnt have the greatest jab or footspeed so he's probably going to have some hairy moments early but i think he can get through them to win. I'll be surprised if joshua looks impressive in this fight, i expect he just about gets the job done while wilder will poleaxe breezedale and all the joshua haters will have a field day even though povetkin is obviously levels above breezedale and would sleep him if they ever fought. Thats my take
But he's no longer a walking lab experiment. If a CLEAN Povetkin lands a single meaningful punch on AJ, in the entire fight, it will trump Douglas - Tyson. And besides, you know Hearn will pay Sasha lay down.
