Is Ali the No.1 h2h Heavyweight?

Yes Ali is the greatest heavyweight H2H. In 2nd place is Larry Holmes.

 

My sentiments exactly. They look at Foreman with rose colored glasses. Only a Foreman fanatic would imply this man had much skill at all. The way these folks tell its as if he won the Heavyweight Championship of the World or something. Pfft...twice 20 years apart.

The way they prop this guy up is beyond me. He's the worst fighter I ever saw.

 

No he was past his peak in the first fight against Frazier. The exile from the ring robbed him of his athletic peak.

I wouldnt say worst but the 2nd worst behind sonny who was a big name in the hw they hype George up so much you would think he had skill he can defeat lennox and fury even though both of those guys was more skilled then the ali George fought

and they dont look through glasses they cant see which is why I call people blind

lennox never would risk taking shots like ali did he would outbox George the way ali would have had he been able to move like he used to the difference is lennox drops George from pain not energy is drained like ali did him

fury outboxes and has fun like always akward punches from angles and wears George down for the ko

 

Now Liston is the worst fighter he ever saw. How these guys made it out of the amateurs let alone pros is beyond me.

 

After reading this thread I am convinced that the h2h GOAT is someone who never lost, was never outboxed, never hurt, fought other prime great fighters with a wide variety of styles consistently and never once struggled or showed vulnerability in any of those fights.

And if a person did exist who met all that criteria, then they never showed heart or an iron will to come from behind to win like all great champs of the past, therefore disqualifying them from consideration.

 

For whatever it's worth, we did a h2h ATG HW tournament several years ago and I believe Lewis won.

 

The correct choice

 

Well, Lewis did defeat every man he face, and he did win the title three times. So there's a good argument there.

I don't agree with it, but LL was very great.

 

His weak chin and struggles against lesser opposition have to be taken into account despite the countless excuses for every one of his less than perfect performances.

 

"He beat every man he faced" is not a good argument because of the following technicalities: McCall was mentally ill in the rematch and shouldn't have even been sparring let alone fighting, the Mercer fight was very close and controversial, and the Vitali stoppage was controversial and Lewis looked like he was ready to pass out.

Having said all that, if someone has Lewis in their top 5 for most dangerous h2h I won't even argue with them. A prepared Lewis wins at least 1 match in a best of 3 with anyone in history.

 

These are very salient points.

And yeah, Lennox was no joke against practically anyone.
