If you got the talent you have it.. If you don't you don't. Once Povektin runs into samual peter you will see what I'm talking about
Amteur experience is important certainly but there are many times it does get a bit over rated. Some get a little crazy with too many amateur fights IMO. There's 12 rounds in Pro's not 4, the scoring, and game is different. thats why ya bring guys a long to adjust. Some guys can be great amateurs and dog **** in the PRO's exhibit francisco Bojado. What matters most is what happens in the PRO ring:good
EXTENSIVE amateur experience isn't exactly a must but to say amateur experience is overrated is another thing. The amateurs are important because they help boxers get an inkling (if only the slightest) of how to deal with pressure situations. If a fighter is down in the Ams, he might react better than if he's down for the first time ever in his career (am and pro) in a big prize fight.
They also get carried away with amateur wins between fighters and translating to the pro's, a la Pavlik vs Taylor 1:yep You need experience, throwing someone into a Pro ring without it is a dangerous game. Its a place to learn, like high school to College, to PRO:yep .
Indeed. Wins in the AMs aren't exactly a tell all about how a fighter is. I mean remember the guy who whooped Miggy in the AMs? Cotto destroyed him when they faced off as pros.
I agree that it helps in the learning process...But guys like Teddy Atlas acts like it is the only indicater of a being good pro.
There could be some boxers who wouldn't really need that much amateur experience and go on to succeed, but those would be special fighters more often than not. I, however, can see where amateur experience would come in handy in sharpening the skills of your average fighter so when he goes pro he would've ironed out any potential bad fighting habits that would've followed him. I think the key is finding balance. You don't want to be in the amateurs forever and by the time you decide to go pro, you can only find fights in has been and senior citizen circuits. At the same time you don't want to skip amateurs altogether.
Oeh be careful with that my friend. They have different elements but it's not like we're comparing swimming with basketball though.
Not only Gamboa makes some noise at the pros, but other great amteurs as well- like Solis,Alexeev,Amir Khan,Rudolf Kraj,Golovkin,Povetkin, and so on.
