After many fights when a fighter loses there are tons of people who come out with the words hype job, past it or he was protected. well after the margo vs williams fight there were many boxing fans saying that margo hasn't got the skills to compete at the top level and now 8 months on a considerable number of us feel he can beat Miguel Cotto. between floyd and hatton there were many people saying that hatton was a club fighter, even though he has only lost one fight. Roy Jones also falls into this categary because after a couple of bad nights people thought he was finished, and he may not be at his best but still can offer the sport alot of excitement. I think some of you modern day fans need to learn that when a fighter loses a fight that is the begining of their career. In the 90's it won't like this, if a fighter lost a fight many people would say that it just wasn't their night, that is why in the 90's boxing was top dog and we had more exciting fights and more fights between the best. However, fans are not always wrong, there are many protected fighters, joe calzaghe for one, but if fans carmed the **** down after a fight then you may see less one sided fights, more prime vs prime fights. Now if you want boxing to return to the glory days then you have got to accept that a boxer is going to lose a fight because that is part of the sport. not everyone is going to be always at their best and I think that you fans need to give more respect to the boxers in the ring. Rocky Marciano retired undefeated but that doesn't mean that he is the greatest fighter of all time. It's time for you fans to stop critisizing and accept defeat when a fighter loses.
It is at the moment but only until these guys loose their zero. Time's gonna come. Don't forget how blown up Tito/Oscar was because of that zero.
Tito and Oscar were two great fighters and the reason they fought was because they knew that both were going to come out with alot of respect win or lose. after the fight there weren't people saying that they were hype jobs were there.
It looks like not many of you fans think that you have not played a part in the decline in boxing, but you have and you will continue to ruin the sport unless you change and give boxers more credit, and also you will miss out on great fights of the future because of your critisizm to them great fighters who have the balls to fight.
yep it is. its used for mareketing and hype. If u listen joe calzaghe now one of his biggest motivations is remainig undefeated
thing is right some mexican turns pro at 15 they throw in him in with whoever win or lose. Then you got another fight who puts together a undefeated winning streak and he has the right promoters and managers and his marketed right and the hype grows about him. And then cos he is undefeated he is claiming to be the best out there but cos he is so scared of losing that zero he is scared to fight the best to prove himself the best. Naz finally fought Barrera and lost that zero.
Maybe MMA is taking over because anyone is willing to fight anyone. and the fans don't give a **** if their man loses.
As important as it is, a good fighter can over-come it. Look at Paquio. Ruiz came back from a crushing defeat - not that he's all that, but you know what I mean... it's nothing hard work and good subsequent matchmaking can't fix. It may mean an interuption in the revenue stream, but that can be re-established over time. Look at how fast Margarito got himself back in the mix. Is matchmaking done now to protect fighters? Hell yeah, and the sport is poorer for it. But emerging fighters were always carefully matched; the problem isn't with protected prospects, the problem is with protected champions - *that* didn't used to happen (not nearly as much, anyway). Now you end up with 3 of the top 5 holding belts and refusing to fight each other. They may or may not "have the 0", but they're being protected.
No, I agree with you. They were great. Undefeated is always gonna generate interest and also excitement. As a fan of Oscar back in the day I got real nervous every time he was gonna fight because that meant the 0 might be taken away. Whitaker, Quartey, then Trinidad! Just saying in Tito's camp it was the same thing. Undefeated does bring an extra bit of excitement. The problem with the new guys is that they defend that 0 too much. By the new standards we might never have seen the DLH/Tito fight. Shane recently criticized Cotto for not giving him an immediate rematch talking about "us old guys gave rematches too make sure people knew who the best was" whereas the new guys are more protective.
a zero means nothing. i see it a loss on his resume means hes fighting to his level at least and not being padded aka JCC Jr. But then you get some one like floyd who does fight at his level every other other other fight. But then a zero isnt a zero its a sign that says look at me and scrutinize my resume and find faults becuase alot of times you find cans.
:good yeh going along the right lines, everyone has played a part in the decline in boxing, the modern fan, the promoters, hbo, the championship title organisations for setting shitty mandotary challengers. its time boxing changed to the way it was, boxing needs to be run by the fans rather than the promorters who are making money and in doing so ruining boxing. but if anything is going to happen then fans need to stop falling for all the shitty hype, the 24/7's and the countdown shows.
