US fighter in history that no one cares about?! That fight with Kova was huge.. Yet hardly anyone gave a ****! Floyd was a PPV behemoth, Tyson could sell out a venue just taking a ****... Ward??? I bet he'd struggle to get recognised in his own kitchen. Why? I'm not saying he has no following but...
What happens when you're a clinchmaster who fights at home and is stuck in a single weightclass. Froch was probably his biggest exposure fight. It's sad but not everyone can be a star. Plenty of amazing fighters who nobody knows about. I mean a good example are the fighters in them lower weightclasses sub 122 pounds. I can't even name a champion below that weight it's a disgrace that I call myself a boxing fan...I just don't like watching them little dudes fight same goes for many others.
Is that true? I have followed the sport years... Even as a newbie I remember Whitaker's name popping up on sites, mags and discussions. Never got that sense that nobody cared. Whitaker is pretty much venerated now. I get the sense that even a lot of casuals know his name even. Historically he's widely regarded. Dunno, maybe you're right, wasn't following boxing back then. Too young.
When it comes to African Americans, they generally have to be notorious loudmouths. When it comes to Mexican Americans, they generally have to be good looking.
Ward is a tremendous fighter.. Hes just boring af.. his personality just doesnt help him be a big PPV star... To sell you have to be either a super entertaining fighter or a loudmouth and Ward is neither
I'd argue that Hopkins coming up was more ostracised, alot of it had to do with himself. I agree that Ward is an enigma in the sense he's a former Gold medalist, ruled a solid 168 division, just beaten the main man at 175, yet Golovkin for arguments sake, a guy who struggles with basic English can sell out stadiums selling twice as much tickets. He is excruciating to watch at times Ward and imo comes across as very unlikeable. ...lol Infact the more I type the more I think you could be correct.
I agree with this but Ward is up there though. Whitaker never really got his due and it's a crying shame.
Same here. I am not a big guy but I am not a fan of watching boxing where the fighters are smaller than me.
naah, hes just talkin out his ass, pea played to some big crowds in his day. ward suffers from his own hand. hes not likable, he doesnt promote himself, you need an act of congress to get him to fight outside his back yard, and he fights ugly as hell. he would make a great villain if he ever wanted to promote himself that way... because the whole Christian thing is comical, considering how he operates, and alongside whom.
When your style is negative and crappy to watch, you better bring a very, very loud mouth (Floyd, for example). Even AB has done a good job of marketing himself despite being a bum (a grade A bum, but a bum nonetheless).
People recognize a phony. While claiming to be a good Christian man he butted Kessler out of there fight and destroyed Kovalev with low blows. Both Ward and his trainer come across as strange!
