I'm not saying he's a fraud by any means God knows this kid has more talent and potential than anyone from 160lbs to 175lbs. But he has adopted the Hopkins/Ruiz/Hatton style and the ref has to stop for gatorade and Ped's in between rounds just to keep separating the fighters. And he initiates EVERY Clench.:patsch

Its awful. When he fights from the outside and boxes its good to watch, but lately all has been doing is illegal dirty tactics.

Obviously you haven't been watching a lot of Ward fights. Ward has fought in the boxer Floyd Mayweather counter punching style. He only turned to this Hopkins style for the super six. Every time he fights he seems to have new elements, he has a check hook now and he has the sneaky inside uppercuts, the mastery of infighting. But he is also capable of using angles and counter punching like Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The difference is the weight, at the higher weights if you fight on your toes you get tired. If you get tired you get knocked out. He's developing a style which will allow him to win into his 40s, while Floyd Mayweather Jr once he loses his legs and reflexes will become hittable and will be fighting rougher fights.

The Hopkins style is better long term, but the Floyd Mayweather style allows one to show more boxing ability. When you fight big guys and you are a little guy it's more impressive to me if you actually fight them and thats what Ward does. He beats people up in any style necessary sometimes switching between styles round by round.

Thats called tactical brawling. Hopkins mastered it. Ruiz mastered it. Hatton mastered it. Holyfield mastered it. It looks dirty, it looks ugly, but it's part of boxing and if you want to be a great boxer for a long period of time, you aren't always going to be faster or stronger than your opponent.

:good He fights his fight very well, but I don't see the versatility he's hyped up as having, either. He's a sound brawler.

So you don't like in-fighting. If you watch the fights where he adopted this style you know it's only recently that hes been using it, and hes only used it against people who were physically stronger or more athletic than him. He used it against Edison Miranda. He used it against Kessler. He used it against Bika but the style he used against Bika was Bika's own style. He did not want to fight like that and was forced into it by Bika.

It's clinching, holding and hitting, headbutting and low blowing, it's part of boxing yes, but Floyd Mayweather is the supreme commander in boxing and he's not relied on these traits.

Floyd is a reactive fighter, Ward is a predetermined, nasty clincher.

I like Ward, but he gets far too much credit, beating a one-eyed fighter lacking a left hook and Allan Green / Sakio Bika who are B and C level fighters.

I watched Ward vs Bika for a few rounds merely to kill time until Marquez vs Katsidis started. Bearing in mind it was almost 5 am UK time Ward almost put me to sleep, luckily Marquez vs Katsidis was an absolute barnstormer!!

He grapples because he has less tools. He uses it as a crutch. Unlike PBF, when in close range he wants to neutralize a counter he will use feints, lateral movements, short punches, etc to get out and reset. Ward uses the grapple as the reset.

He is young and still developing. But yeah it is boring since he cant use more advance techniques like PBF does.

Ward has more punches than Mayweather, better technical skills than Mayweather, is smarter than Mayweather. Ward threw a check hook or two in the Bika fight that I didn't even know he had, of course Mayweather has this punch too but Wards was actually better. Ward also has better body punching by far than Mayweather, along with better use of angles.

Mayweather has better defense, better footwork, better timing, but his technical skills are over rated. Mayweathers technical skills are a result of his reflexes, his timing which is innate, and his defense. He does not have good body punching, he does not have good in-fighting, he does not throw combinations anymore.

As far as technical skills go Ward is the most technically skilled fighter I've ever seen. I can't name a fighter that did everything right to the level Ward does it, he practically fights a flawless fight every time he fights, you watch the tape and you can't find any weaknesses. You can't try to physically overpower him because he's tough and technically skilled using liver shots, headbutts, etc to prevent anyone from trying to out muscle him. You won't outbox him because hes an Olympic gold medalist who has never been outboxed and probably wont be in that weightclass. You can't counter punch him because he has great footwork, uses angles, does not telegraph his punches.

If you don't think Ward is technically one of the most gifted fighters of all time, point one one technical weakness. If you can find one I'll be surprised.

Ward is an Olympic Gold medalist. You don't win Gold if you can't box. Ward also has a great amateur record. And watch his fights before Edison Miranda, he did not fight close range in every fight so watch the tapes where he boxes in the Mayweather style. He can do that too.

Ward has incredible skill but he is becoming like the modern day Hopkins. I find Mayweather a million times more entertaining than him. Even academy award winner Andre Dirrell is a bit more entertaining.

Roy Jones Jr did not have to rely on technical abilities to throw 4 hooks and 5 uppercuts in 10 seconds. It does not change the fact that Hopkins is still beating people up, as is Holyfield, while Roy Jones Jr. has been losing.

Floyd Mayweather Jr is going to end up like a Roy Jones Jr. while Ward is going to be like a Hopkins or Holyfield.
