Good question. I rate Arguello ever so slightly above Chavez. They are numbers 10 and 11 on my lightweight list, and numbers 24 and 25 on my p4p. So I have them incredibly close.
Arguello was true boxing greatness. He punishes Chavez to the body and head, backs him up and knocks him out. You know whats amazing, none of these guys, Chavez Mweather Pac Whitaker ever fought 15 rounders. Look what happened to Azumah in 15. There is a HUGE difference and the punishment adds up and collapses the house. Just an interesting tangent I think a lot about.
Great. I turn the golden 65 next week and my membership in The Mentally Defective League achieves tenure . God has blessed me more than I deserve. It's great to have a site to argue boxing with like minds, whether they agree with me or not.
Thanks. My birthday wish will be for 15 round fights after same day weigh-ins. And no fights ever in lost Vegas with either incompetent or corrupt judges and refs.
Chavez is boxing greatness as well. He is renowned for his stamina and late surges and is one of those fighters who would be even more effective over 15 vs 12. Look at the Taylor fight and he was fading by then. He would thrive on the 15 round distance. You make stopping Chavez sound far too easy. He walked thru one of the biggest hitters in 135 pound history. Chavez is immensely better than anyone Alexis ever fought at 130, as is Alexis for Chavez. you can make a case for either guy, absolutely. I see a stoppage for either not overly likely tho. At 130 i would narrowly favour Alexis as i think it was his best weight while Chavez was peak at 135. One thing is for sure - a fight between these two would be grueling and they would leave a big part of themselves in that ring.
y On that we do agreee. A fighters fight! I do think Arguello KOS him though. But that's alright, because at lightweight, Roberto Duran knocks them both out. Btw, Rosario wasn't all that. And it took Chavez a long time to do what Ramirez did in 4. Arguello would have cracked Edwins china closet fast. Maybe a 1 punch KO.
I also think Escalera would give Chavez hell. Could you imagine Lockridge or Laporte going 15 with Arguello? Arguello cracked Gibraltars nobody ever ko'd. And was smart enough to take care of a survival specialist like little La Porte.
Watch the Boza fight where Arguello decided turn up the heat and forced warrior Boza to say fcuk this sh:t. That is what separates the very top echelon of fighters from the just great. They do what others cannot. Again and again.
I cannot envisage ANYONE stopping prime Chavez in 5 rounds. Not like Arguello was a fast starter either. Duran would beat both, agreed. I am not sure he'd stop Chavez tho. Lesser fighters went the distance with him so it's not carved in stone. Rosario was a very good fighter. In the 80's he only ever lost to Ramirez, Camacho and Chavez with Camacho being a disputed decision. There's nothing wrong with that. Arguello was dropped by a much lesser fighter in Ganigan, perhaps Rosario might have dropped him too. Many in here a while back picked Camacho over Arguello based on styles.
I didn't say in 5 rounds. I figure later in the fight. Ganigan (RIP) had an awkward style and for me hit harder. My
Escalera is not close to being on the level of Chavez. Laporte has one of the best chins in the history of boxing as his record clearly shows, i could see him having a great chance of going the distance. Lockridge was stopped once in his life in an absolute outlier. He was never stopped at 130. Leon went 15 with Alexis, these two would definitely have a chance. Could you see Fernandez beating Chavez? No doubt Arguello was hard to see the final bell against and stopped plenty of durable fighters. Chavez cut his teeth doing just this as well.
point is this; every time there is a dream fight between great fighters it seems it always goes to decision in the threads. To me, a Duran, Arguello, Louis, Gomez who KOd there challengers at their best weight would do the same. They would use what made them so toplevel and destroy the other great who is a little below them. For instance, I love Arguello, but as great as he was, against Duran I think Roberto had what it took to stop him in 10 rounds. It doesn't diminish Alexis, Roberto just has that much more.
