Of course he is, this isnt even debatable. He is not an ATG but he will be inducted into the hall of fame for what he brought to the sport. Gatti was a fantastic fighter, sure he was destroyed by Floyd and Oscar but he fought them in their primes and they are ATG themselves.

2 weight world champion, 4 x fight of the year, fan favorite, great entertaining fighter (knockout artist early on).

You didnt mention the greats Robinson, Gomez, Ward and Baldimor. Maybe that will add more luster to your argument.

if the ibhf could create a ATG catagory. i would love that. because it would separate good fighters in the ring who did a great service to the sport (half the reason why the non competitor addition i.e. buffer, mercante and fwank are in) to the great tacticians and physical behmoths of all ages.

if the ibhf creates some seperations and pecking order of some kind to distinguiush the great p4pers and the men who built the sport and gave boxing context i.e. barry, arturo, alexis ETC

That above is a load of ****.

edit: for me to sit here and argue about who knows more about this and that boxing wise is futile.

John Garfield knows his boxing, ringside for the greatest fights.

terry downes, mike leahy, harvey mccollough

    just pissing around:yep.

but yeah, gatti will never get in for his wins. but his performances and the fights that his style created. 4 x fight of the year.

only man the ring had 2 fights of the year at the same time for the 2nd ward match and the 1st.

dont worry nobody is saying he is a all time great for his skills, the competition he beat or the 2 divisions he was champion of. but does he deserve some recognition form the boxing world for his service to the sport. definitely.

    in perspective

i think joel casamayor should be a hall of famer, mainly due to being a lineal lightweight and a super featherweight titlist, the first man from communist cuba to win a title, became the lynchpin for team freedom, which is why we see, rigo, gamboa, solis, lara be given the protections and support that they need when they defect. only beat by genuine world champions. and alot of great fights.

i dont think its a lock but i think its a good enough career that has some resonance within the sport to be given at least a trinket of a trophy or a plaque for what he has doen for the sport. similar with gatti, boardwalk hall being colloquially known as "the house that gatti built".

i understand exactly what you mean. i just feel that some people shouldnt be left out because they where not given the protection and managment that some fighters are given.

I understand what you mean. Gatti was exciting and fun to watch. He gave fight fans thrills. But did he needed to be managed and protected by guys that were clearly nothing more than B level fighters? Loses to Gomez and Baldimor were towards the end of his career. But what the Robinson and Ward loses? if you cant beat those guys than you fall short for the hall.

The loss to Ward could have went either way and it was also one of the greatest fights of all time.

Gomez...come on get real. Gatti was nothing more than a gatekeeper when that fight took place.

This is probably about #3 in my all time favourite fights list!

I think he should get in. All true Boxing fans ask is that a fighter gives 100% of himself during a fight - Gatti gave 110% every time regardless if it was win, lose or draw. He brought a lot of interest to the sport and got people who wouldnt ordinarily watch Boxing to tune in.

The proof of this is in the fact he could lose a fight and still sell out his next one!

Seeing as the sole criteria for voting is supposed to be a boxer’s achievements in the ring as a professional, Gatti shouldn't be inducted. The voting criteria doesn't include popularity, entertainment value or anything else other than what they achieved in the ring.

Gatti was dominated by the two genuinely great fighters he faced (Mayweather and De La Hoya), and he has prime losses to Manfredy, Robinson and Ward. His biggest wins over Patterson and Ruelas are quality, but it isn't a HOF resume by any stretch.

That said, Gatti will almost certainly be inducted when he is eligible, and taking into account what he gave in the ring, he more than anyone deserves a free pass into the Hall.
