I'm not sure how many of you watch HBOs "The Fight Game" but in there last episode and most recent episode they awarded Al Haymon the 2014 "person of the year" after handing out this award Jim Lampley went on a rant about how Al Haymon is ruining the sport by creating mismatches left and right with all his 130 fighters and that even though the path of least resistance worked for Floyd Mayweather that path won't work for other fighters in the sport and this path is ruining the sport. Now while I do agree that 2014 was a horrible year for boxing and that bad match ups hurt hte sport, I think it's horrible for HBO to run some type of smear campaign against Al Haymon when no promoter is innocent of creating the most scintillating match ups possible at any given time. Let's take a look at some of the major promoters/fighters out there.... - Pacquiao fought Algiri on a terrible card ( arum ) - Zou Shiming is headlining terrible cards ( arum ) - GGG hasn't fought anyone worth a damn honestly (not sure of who is promoter is) and he kind of gets a pass cause he handles his comp how it should be but still he's not even close to the under dog in any fight the list can go on and on to be honest. 2014 was a completely **** year for the sport and no promoter is really doing the sport justice by continuing to only have in house fights and in house mismatches. I hope a day comes when boxing is a LEAGUE... like the nba, mlb, nfl, ufc and there is no more internal bickering, jealous, trash talking and hidden agendas to tarnish the sport because at the end of the day the only things that are being hurt are the PPVs & how fans look at the sport.
Posters like you annoy the life out of me. Get it into your thick skull: NOBODY at MW wants to fight Golovkin. Nobody. If he calls out any MW and they refuse him, how is it his fault or his promoters fault? You can lead a horse to water (Floyd/Manny)... Haymon is ruining the sport. He is THE KING of mismatches.
all promoters are evil but a necessary evil. there is of course the lesser of those. i always liked GBP, delahoya usually puts on stacked undercards and reaches out to boxing fans a fair bit. arums pure ****ing evil haymon is only now getting the attention and starting to really dig his talons into the sport (though he supposedly has had it in a strangle hold for many years) and im not really liking what im seeing from him
only a troll is going to claim GGG is ducking 160 fighters, so many of them refuse to even mention him as a possibility which sucks for GGG but he said numerous times hed fight anyone 154-168 now ill cut him slack for not taking on a lara who has been calling him out because he brings sweet **** all to the table but he wont even mention ward as a possibility (who has been calling him out). sure we all know wards got his troubles with promoters but the least GGG could do is make it clear "yeh sure ill fight you" :good
so why not jump up and fight 168. I bet froch would take GGG in a second. I'm not accepting the "everyone is ducking him" excuse that your throwing out. In fact I bet the dirrell brother would take him at a catch weight. I forget his name, not andre. I'm just not buying that excuse.
No. Haymon is not only a cancer to the sport but also violating the Ali Act. He is a pseudo promoter hiding behind the title of "advisor" and has been successful in burning bridges in the sport. HBO has blackballed him from their network for good reason. Showtime is now getting the raw deal that they bought themselves into. Top Rank has been an elite promoter for decades and their production of champions reflects that. Their business model hasn't changed and they are among the best match makers and career guiders in the sports history. For a great example of a current fighter being brought through the ranks appropriately and gaining recognition is Terrence Crawford. You can't tell me that Top Rank is the sleaziest when their track record shines to unbiased eyes. You bring up Shimming who is co-headling cards in CHINA, his home country. WTF is wrong with that? Do you not understand the market that Arum has tapped in to? It's obvious that you don't because it's the one thing you jump on as "bad" moves done by Top Rank. Never mind the entire ****ty year by Haymon with unreal mismatches (Garcia/Salka), bad business decisions (Quillin) and overt exploitation of contracts (the end of ShoBox featuring up and comers) to destroy the networks budget. Haymon was responsible for all that and more.
I'm not mad at shiming headlining.... but his fights suck. why do you care about the market? Forget about all that stuff, i just want to see a competitive fight. I don't care who the fighter is.
Arum and Haymon are no different. Haymon is only building a stable, building a brand. And for that, he has to take little risk/high reward fights for some of his matches. If all of his fighters are losing before they're household names, no one will be buying. These people are in it for money, not because they find boxing fun or just want to put on a show.
#1 is the reason for #2, and I don't care about it, just understand the reasoning for it. And that is not something that I can knock Top Rank for doing. It's a very smart business move and tapping into a huge market. #3 should be a big reason why Haymon is all bad for the sport. He should have matched up Peterson and Garcia this year, but hasn't and from the looks of it, won't be in the future.
what i'm asking though is as fans should we care about promoters business moves? for a while it seemed liek the cool thing to talk about but i hope that most people are starting to get over it. 2014 sucked!
