Thinking about the 2000 - 2004 class and it seems to me that the quality of fighters, fighting in the olympics have been somewhat deminished.

You look at guys from the 84-96 class and their champions were usher'd along fast and acheived success early.

Now you have guys from the olympics with an extensive amateur background waiting 4-5 yrs having set backs and not having a long undefeated run.

It secures bigger paychecks when you turn pro but it doesnt guarentee a world title.

Amatuer boxing is so unliek the pro game that a 4 round pro fights is nothinglike a 4 round Am fight. They need to make the Amateur game more like the pros, scrap the point scoring system (it just doesnt work!!) judge the fight properly and get rid of standing 8 count rule. I also think head gear should be scrapped but that is hear to stay unfortunately.

The pros and ams are more different than ever.

If you watch say the '88 Olympics, Jones and Lewis both had styles that would have (and did) work in the pros.

These days, you look at top Olympians such as Amir Khan - even ignoring the 54sec blowout, he still boxes like an amateur. Dropping the non-punching hand, clueless up close, clueless when hit etc.

The amateur game is so weedy now it is unbelievable. As soon as a guy is remotely hurt the fight is stopped. A nosebleed and you have a delay. The system doesn't reward good 'boxing' - it rewards lunging, holding and running away like a *****.

    Oh, and hometown fighters.

Vasyl Lomachenko will prove it in the years to come.

He will end up an ATG, just wait and see.

Comparing today's Olympic boxing to pro boxing is like comparing (American) Football to Football. Yeah, the names are similar, but they are pretty much entirely different games.
Today's Olympic boxing is closer to fencing than it is pro prize-fighting.

not the way they do the scoring these days. They should also lose the head gear also.

I feel that it is due to the point system that the amatuers fight a certain way. A knock down don't mean anything compare to accumiating points.

    Altogether.

Does headguards really protect you against serious injury, bearing in mind as soon as a clean shot lands on the chin the fight is over?

The open scoring has to go - if they want to stick with the computer thing then fine (grudingly) but a guy shouldn't be allowed to know that he is ahead.

The guys that were successful were the ones that scored early and ran/held for the rest of the fight. Kenny Egan in his final nearly had the guy ready to go over in the third with body blows, and received nothing.

One of the British lads knocked a Ghanain over with a cracking body shot, which.....

    1. Didn't score
    2. The ref waited for him to get up (almost 20-25secs)
    3. He was gone - was as bad as Castillo vs Hatton

You also find no points are given for body shots and if a guy lands more than a one punch, say he lets a 1-2 combo go and they both land, itll only ever be scored as 1 point. The system is completely flawed and should be scrapped.

It was brought in to stop the RJJ thing happening again, but has actually made the system WORSE - by rewarding cheating and bad boxing.

I thought the whole idea of boxing was to beat your opponent by consistently producing clean and effective work, beating him to the punch, countering, making them miss etc.

Anyone can lunge in with a straight right, then hold and get on the bike. The only skill involved is making the ****ing weight.

I remember when this point system came out and the majority was against it. It suited more the other countries as I remember.
