Hey boxing fans, do you think that being undefeated counts for much these days?
I mean some of the all time greats have lost fights such as Ray Robinson, Ali, Duran, Tyson, Lewis, Jones jr etc,
even the fighter of decade has lost 3 fights, so I just want to hear some perspectives guys, thanks

yes, being unbeaten is a phenominal achievement. floyd mayweather and joe calzaghe are exceptional fighters and don't lose to mediocre opposition - they never have an off day all the way through their careers :deal

you're only as good as your victories. and those will only get further dissected by how good those fighters were when they fought them. So to some fighters it may matter more to them than the public since someone will eventually point out a flaw with who they beat, how they did it,and who they haven't fought.

no, because undefeated usually means hand picked comp.

I personally always thought it was somewhat special to have a period of time undefeated such as a 10yrs or more
Althought depending on the opposition available

i say yes and BIGTIME..Look at what happened to Fedor..the streak is over and well it helps that he was kickin the guys ass before he got caught but still its over and the aura thing is not there..atleast not as much..

The Greatest example u can think of is Floyd Mayweather..Look at the amount of hate threads his critics have for him on a daily basis..

Look at HOW OFTEN the 1st Castillo match is brought up!!

How often is the rematch brought up?? how often his hand injury in the 1st fight is brought up?? how often floyds ASS KICKING in the rematch is brought up??

If floyd had a couple decisive losses before that fight u think people would bring it up???

ofcourse not..and floyd USES the Undefeated streak like no other..you wanna see if he continues the streak or not..he says he's god because of that streak and man that PISSES people right off...and it works..VERY well for floyd..

so TS having an Undefeated streak CAN be a bigdeal if u USE IT Correctly...

and nobody does that better than Floyd..

Actually, being undefeated was/is never much of a big thing.
Take Joe Calzaghe for example. He retired undefeated, but at the low level of competition he fought all those years in Wales, even Tommy Morrison would have been undefeated had he fought solely in Wales.

The undefeated sticker has no bearing on the fighter's career and competition level. In fact, a fighter with loses on his resume is loses on his resume is usually the better fighter than those who do not. Examples are; Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Ali, Sweet pea, Hearns, all with loses, but all the greatest fighters the world has ever known. I
n this instance, the loses merely represent that fighter had better, much more competitive match making relative to someone like Calzaghe whose competition was dubious, weak, and very well managed.

    being undefeated doesnt mean anything

It doesnt matter how many fighters you beat

It matters WHO are the fighters you beat

Are we talking about for all-time rankings or in respect to the sport today?

Because it counts these days more then it ever did. Today fighters fight less, if you lose a fight, if you drop a bad decision, DQ for a low blow, come in weight drained you can suddenly become unmarketable, lose sponsorship, lose fans, ratings, become avoided... One loss can bring a career to a screeching halt.
On the other hand taking a loss and coming back stronger can also help a career, it provides depth to the background, shows resolve. Look at all the guys fighting today that have loses and are considered tops in the sport: Pacquiao, Hopkins, Klitschko(s), Cotto, Adamek, Williams, Wonjongkam, Darchinyan.
