I have to be honest I thought he was just another one of those guys who throws a towel over his shoulder and walks in the gym and says he’s a trainer. But he did well with Fury but could only go so far with him because of lack of experience. But he seems to be doing well with the other guys and he also seems to be a very nice and likable guy.
heres what i replied to a poster a while back about what i would do to handle wilder, and how it relates to fury' -that i need to reassess what i think i know about boxing. these are from may 2019. take a look at what i wrote about what it would take to beat wilder, what troubles him and how he reacts to what. now play the second fight in your mind. how was fury fighting? what was he doing? had he ever fought like that? did anyone expect him to fight like that? and ask yourself, would what i wrote back then still make sense to me, or am i being delusional? -ive noticed that too, he has too much belief that his right hand can get him out of trouble in any situation. i can see why he may believe that, but i can also see that without that right, hes a very weak boxer. an aggressive boxer with good head movement would absolutely bewilder him, but the hw division is so pizz poor that i cant even find that. -i would train aj to keep turning wilder to his left, and when he gets position on the turn, punch hard at his chest. just keep touching him hard. wilder cant box, he doesnt deal well with getting hit, no matter where it is. so hes going to react to getting punched hard, and i guarantee that reaction will create openings. it also saps his energy, having to keep reacting to hard punches, so it slows his own punches in later rounds. things he should work on, his left hook, keeping his chin tucked, and keeping his left hand glued to his face. there will come a point when wilder lands a good one and will go all out, this is the time to catch him with a left hook as he swings both arms wide, cause he always does. just keep disciplined and i see aj having little trouble with wilder -im not sure what you mean by "real deal". can he ko anyone if he catches you? yes he can. is he a top 3 hw? yes he is. is his boxing ability overall, B or better? no its not. wilder is the beneficiary of half a dozen separate things that lined up just right, to put him where he is today. from the overall level of talent at hw, to the guys specifically chosen for wilder, to the way these guys choose to fight wilder, to the way fans interpret what they are seeing, to how willing those fans are to accept whatever they get served, etc... i dont hate wilder, i would much rather have an american hw champ than a foreigner. not because i care, but because i know how that bothers so many, and i think thats funny. but i got to be realistic about what i see, wilder cant fight, he just has very fast hands for the reaction times you find at hw. he hits hard, but not atg hard, he just finds you when you dont have time to react.
I can see how he might rub some people up the wrong way. But I think he's very solid. Clearly very good on the fitness side and learning all the time on the technical side. And he's passionate about the sport. It's great to see young trainers like him and McGuigan come through IMHO.
