I'd rather have an outspoken trainer like Ben Davidson than creeps like Virgil Hunter and Adam Booth. Yes Davidson talks a lot but being a boxing trainer sucks and you gotta make yourself stand out. He also doesn't make himself centre of attention and does still give the glory to the fighter, unlike a Tunde Ajayi for example. But to be fair, we were talking about actual boxing trainers.
Trainers generally are overrated and underrated by fans. If top boxers are getting good results fom working with a trainer, that's a good well done. It doesn't prove the trainer is a genius or anything. On the other hand, if a boxer doesn't get good results with a trainer, that doesn't mean the trainer's entirely to blame either. There are lots of factors at play.
You dont have to pay any attention to him Its not like he is in your back garden turning off the water when you are alseep every night
Great quote mate, that’s where I learnt about his relationship with Dundee. Brilliant book, very good read.
Speaking of annoying trainers, I’ve been listening to the 5Live boxing podcast immediate reaction to the Taylor fight with Bunce, Costello and they had Joe Gallagher on. Joe was coming across really well until he said “I spoke with Ben Davidson today and told him Ramirez likes to reach in with his back hand, so tell Josh to lure him in and catch him with the uppercut - look what happened!” Bunce and Costello went deadly silent, then laughed as they thought he must be taking the mick, before Joe dogs added “I’m not taking credit I just see things!”
He still is. The arrogance of the boy during his commentary tonight. Basically any fighter would improve if they were with him he said.
Davison does not have the voice which imparts enthusiasm and excitement - Adam Smith is Jim Watt without the boxing knowledge and gets away with it.
I don't mind the lad to be honest. He's quite insightful, but admittedly not very engaging. Better than Bellew at least. Or Haye.
Everything he tries to say is an attempt to come off as knowledgeable. He says a lot of the same stuff. I don't know how many times he said "investing to the body".
Absolute helmet Sam Jones. The fact he’s somehow wormed his way into boxing by basically being a Poundland Hearn shows the state it’s in.
