I know what some of you will say. It sounds ridiculous and maybe it is, but when I started wondering if there is an Ali-like fighter today, Benavidez popped up in my mind as the closest thing we have to him and surprisingly I think they have several things in common. -he's a big guy of similar height and possibly reach, like Ali -undoubtedly the guy has incredibly hand speed & combinations, like Ali -certainly isn't a quiet mouse when it comes to personality, like Ali -whenever he fights he electrifies the air, like Ali -could become the next big American boxer, like Ali Particularly to point 4, people enjoy watching him fight and generally speaking there's never a boring fight with him in it. He's not nearly a household name but I think he could become one if he keeps getting big fights against champions. I give the guy a lot of **** but I think after recognizing some of these much needed positives he brings into the sport I might become a fan.
Disagree. The fighter that was the Ali of our generation was Floyd. And I think it will be a long time before we see another fighter that can generate that much attention to the sport like those two again
Why is the question raised in the thread title very different to the one being asked in the poll?? Does Benavidez bring positives to the sport? Answer : Yes, he does. Is Benavidez the new Ali? Answer : Hell no.
Do we have to put the new guys to such impossibly high comparisons immediately? Can we just not let it play out and argue about it with a little perspective? It ain't fair. At least Benevidez ain't callin' Canelo an "Uncle Tom" or the equivalent en espanol.
He is not an Ali but he is the fighter the sports needs. An all action throw back fighter who comes to hurt people plus is very skilled and marketable. He ticks all the boxes to be the face of boxing, far more than the likes of Tank Davis. He just needs the Canelo fight to seal the deal.
This thread must be click bait with a title as ridiculous as that. How can you even think to compare Benavidez to Muhammad Ali?
Well I strongly disagree in terms of his style, but David is good for boxing. A hard hitting, brave, young boxer who is willing to take the difficult fights and doesn't duck anyone. What he has in common with Ali is that he is truly trying to clear out his division and is seeking greatness.
Hey man, that ain't fair. They have more in common than that. They're also both males and members of the human race. And they're both boxers, can't forget that one
I concede. I want to see Benavidez move up. I think Canelo will avoid him because Canelo wants to (a) protect his PBC money which is dependent on him fighting and beating their "elite" champions. (b) he wants to avoid another Bivol type of loss which would seriously disrupt his momentum, clout, contract and reputation. Benavidez needs to use 2024 as a springboard for moving upto LHW.
