I'd put him in the top 50 but would call someone crazy who had him top 25. Lists like that are always subjective and hard to quantify.
A very very difficult question IMO. From 1980 onwards, I rank Hopkins 5th (Leonard, Whitaker, Jones, Chavez, Hopkins - Chavez and Hopkins joint 4th. This time-period does not include guys like Duran and Arguello whose peaks were pre-1980). Is he top 30 of all-time? I honestly can't say with any certainty as I have never written a top 30. My gut feeling is that B-Hop would fall slightly short and be in the 30-40 bracket, but as I said I have never written one so if I did he may very well make it in there. He is a stone-cold ATG and an absolute lock for the top 40 IMO.
Some of the guys Hopkins would have to move past to get into my 30. Jack Britton Stopped once in 350 fights. 37 world title bouts (with only one strap available). Dominated epic series with fellow ATG Ted Kid Lewis. Three time WW champion of the world. George Dixon Nat Fleitcher's #1 Bantam of all time. Two weight world champion in a time when black fighters struggled to get fights full stop. Evander Hollyfield #1 Cruiser of all time. Linear champ at 200 and at HW. One of the greatest Heavies in history. Thomas Hearns Six weight world champion.
Somebody stated before the Winky Wright fight that Hopkins should be 35-45.I remember agreeing with that. Two convincing wins over Wright and Palik is enough to move him up to 25.Ring Magazine stated after Tarver fight that Hopkins was the best of his generation ahead of Roy Jones,Julio Cesar Chavez,Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson.
How do you weight the two losses to Taylor? How do you weight Hearns utter destruction of top 10 lock Roberto Durnan? Compred to top 25 lock Roy Jones's domination of Hopkins?
Two wins over good opposition fighting above their best weight enough to move Hopkins ahead of guys like Jofre, Olivares, Napoles, Ike Williams, Carlos Ortiz, Terry McGovern, Marvin Hagler...no. Not at all.
Far better fighters faced does not mean he is greater. Far better fighters beaten would. Duran, Cuevas and Benitez - who else was there? Hearns was stopped in his two biggest fights.
