Duran was way past his prime when Hearns destroyed him.Still a very good win but,Duran had already been beaten hands down by Hagler,Leonard and Benitez.Cuevas is not an atg top 100.Hearns certainly dominated Benitez but he wasn't able to knock him out like Leonard had done earlier.Hopkins' biggest and best win over unbeaten p4p king Felix Trinidad is better than any of Hearns' three biggest wins.

Hopkins is 0-2 against fighters in your top 100 - do you not have De La Hoya or Trinidad or Wright in your top 100?

Hearns wasn't 40 when he fought Leonard and Hagler. The only guy to beat Hopkins (other than the debut) was Roy Jones Jr, IMO a greater fighter p4p than Hagler. And unlike Hearns he wasn't stopped, never has been.

Hearns's win over Duran is a great win and better than anything on Hopkins's resume, despite the fact Duran was 33 or 34, coming off a loss, and fighting 19lbs above his natural fighting weight, and that he never had another great win after that fight other than Barkley.

Hearns does have a better resume and he was as good h2h as Hopkins was at middle, but I have Hopkins 4th best middleweight in history, I do not have Hearns at 4th best welterweight considering his resume at that weight. Though Hearns's achievements at multiple weight probably negate this.

There's not a lot in it at all, but I edge with Hopkins.

Duran had just turned in one of his very best performances against Marvin Hagler when Hearns blew him up and still had a win over a punching MW ahead of him in Iran Barkley (one of his better wins). That Duran is a better win for Hearns, in a p4p sense, than any one of Hopkins wins.

I agree, very good win though, probably on a par with anything Hopkins has apart from Trinidad.

A better win than any of Bernard's

    This is pretty irrelevant.

Nonsense. Beating a past prime Duran and Benitez at his very best weight is better than beating Trinidad at middle. Clearly.

But I had Hopkins beating Calzaghe by a point.

Wright and Pavlik were ranked in most people's top 6 pound for pound at the time and Hopkins not only beat them he dominated them.Lets not forget Wright was infact ranked number two pound for pound a year earlier ring magazine said he would have been number one had he not coasted the last two rounds against Taylor and Hopkins was the first fighter to beat Wright without controversy in 13 years.

You seem not to understand the difference between quality of fight and quality of performance.

Hopkins? Top 30? Not even close. He's an almost great fighter and I have respect for the man...but I've never been sold on his boxing talent. He's rugged, well-studied, and he keeps his body in terrific shape...he knows every trick, but from a talent perspective. Let me put it this way...I think just about every great middleweight from the last great middleweight generation would've killed him. That's right. I think Hagler, Hearns and Leonard would've beat the heck out of him. All three of those fighters had more speed, power and talent than Hopkins. Sorry, but Hopkins is a fighter feasting in an average era.

anyone claiming that hopkins age is a factor ie, he only lost to jones before he was such and such an age are talking ****. he has proved himself to be perfectly able bodied at 43 , its a non argument after what he did to pavlik. the guys superhuman as far as his age goes, it aint a factor.

so hearns performance against hagler was nothing special then ?it takes two to make a fight that highly thought of. and youve changed the goalposts more often than usual today pac, to suit your arguments. i ilke ye, but its true

MCGRAIN When I watched Hagler-Duran last two years ago.I scored it 147-140(10-3-2 even) for Hagler. It's common knowledge that the fight wasn't as close as the judges had it same thing with Benitez-Duran which Sugar Ray Leonard quoted on the fight 'I thought it was a lopsided win for Benitez'.Duran was by all accounts comfortably outside the p4p top ten when Hearns flattened him.How can you say that was a better win than Trinidad.Duran fought Hearns at 154 3 weights above his best weight.Trinidad was coming off two of the most impressive performances of his career against Joppy at middleweight and Fernando Vargas at Junior middleweight.Trinidad's best weight was 154 not 147

Have you seen the Taylor fights? Did you think he lost both of them? Do you think the Hopkins of the Trinidad fight in 2001 would have had such trouble with Taylor?

I like you too, but no it isn't. Hearns was brave against Hagler which made it thrilling, but he was never really in the fight. He was thoroughly outgunned. Marquez was excellent for 12 rounds against the world p4p#1. Do you not see the difference? The goalposts are perfectly stationary.

i have seen them, i didnt score cos i dont but both were close. off days maybe ? he was good against calzaghe and great against pavlik, those two fights come AFTER the ones you mention.
everyones entitled to their opinion, and it really matters not one jot to me if you rank hopkins above hearns or not, and i'm sure you feel the same. i reckon hearns is top 30 , hopkins isn't.

I do have De La Hoya in my top 100, but i'm sorry, i'm not prepared to consider Middleweight De La Hoya in the same way. If you like, you can write that he is 1-2 against men on my 100, but I am not impressed by an ATG MW beating a man who's been at super-feather.

Tito didn't make it, though he might now.

So what? Are you saying that losing to Taylor at 40 is comparable to losing to Hagler whilst younger? That is a nonsensical position.

There seems to be a lot of thrashing around here for reasons to rate Hearns below Hopkins - "Hearns wasn't old when he lost". "Hopkins was never stopped". These things are to be taken into account, of course, but so what if Hopkins was never stopped? So what if he didn't lose to Taylor on your card? None of this is really THAT relevant. I

I agree with you that Jones is to be ranked ahead of Hagler, but you are losing sight of what pound for pound is! Hearns was a welterweight who lost to one of the five greatest middleweights who ever lived upon moving up. Hopkins was a great widdleweight who lost to a great fighter at a weight they both were reasonably comfortable at. There is a difference.

You think that Hopkins reign at MW and short stint at 175 are about equal with Hearns six weight titles. I would disagree with this - Hearns success through the weights in terms of titles is one of the most extraordinary in all of boxing history. But even assuming you are right, Hearns still has the best win of the two, and of the next great three wins, between the two of them, Hearns has two of the best.

I think it is closer now, but not close, I think the edge is clearly to Hearns.

I like both the wins, Pavlik especially, but try to keep in mind that pound for pound doesn't allow for suddenly adding ten pounds and leaping to an unproven weight against a great fighter. Wright, especially, is not a 170lb fighter, at all. I would expect Hopkins to beat him at that weight something like 5/5. But we all know it would be much more interesting at 158lbs.
