Love him or hate him for his personality and his boxing style is his personal story inspirational and testement to the adage if you work hard you can achieve regardless of your background.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-WJJmHYGkY&NR=1[/ame] This is what i mean this man has got to be one of the toughest men alive and im not talking Physicaly im talking mentally.
nope he's just an overrated dirty fighter and a racist. His escape from the ghetto story is typically sensationalised because he's from the USA. The hardships in his life pale in comparison to any successful fighter coming out of africa, who also had a much harder time in terms of living conditions, hype, promotion and match making.
Im not going to praise a guy because he made something of himself when he got out of prison. You arent supposed to go to prison in the first place.
I think he certainly gets away with a lot of things that other fighters would get absolutely crucified for, purely because of his character. I mean, people criticise his opponents for such-and-such, but totally overlook the fact that he is a very dirty fighter, a massively sore loser and will go to the very crudest lengths (e.g. vs. Calzaghe) to win a fight. Nonetheless, the amount of discipline - especially given his background - he shows in and out of the ring, his intelligence, commitment and all-round class as a fighter is plainly venerable. I can't help but admire him for his ring generalship, craft and ring intellect, the rough edges notwithstanding.
I accept your point Jimmie, but I do admire the fact that since his release he has been a pro-social member of society as opposed to how he could have turned out!! I'm sure many "Cons" have considered Bernard's story and it may well have gave them some of them a semblance of hope, which is of vital importance for those seeking to turn their life around.
