Because most of Hopkins' best wins were above MW. I probably shouldn't have said tie. I tend to have Hagler edge Hopkins at MW and I think overall Hagler did more at that weight. I also think Hagler was a bit more of the complete package as a fighter, although that's saying a lot.
How then can you rank Hopkins ahead of Monzon at MW? Monzon beat the better opposition and was the more dominant MW than either Hagler or Hopkins.
1) Hagler 2) Monzon 3) Hopkins Of course, Ray Robinson the greatest Welter of all time, and THE GOAT....but there's something about Hopkins impressive reign (in which he did beat some very good fighters, if not the best) and his dominance over Trinidad, and his beating of someone who was seen as a possible great MW for a short period of time in Pavlik (regardless of the weight) means I have Hopkins higher. So, for me, I have Hopkins higher than Robinson as a MW. I honestly don't know if Ray Robinson would beat Hopkins at MW. And before you call that blasphemy, may I remind you that in the previous paragraph I stated SRR was THE GOAT. So I clearly rate him. But B-Hop makes EVERYONE look bad, so why not Robinson as well? I seem to say this all the time, but I expect to get flamed for this, but oh, well.........
It's hard to not put him right up there with anyone else! Many of the fighters that are mentioned including Robinson, Leonard and Hearns spent their greater years at lower weights! I do not think anyone including Hagler and Monzon would make an easy night of Hopkins!!!!!! And I would not be shocked if Hopkins won!!!
no that would be mike mccallum(of the past 50 years anyway)how is he the best mw ever?he is now a LHW who beat the man at middleweight which does nothing for his mw legacy in my opinion.
I have Hopkins at 3rd in terms of middleweight ATG rankings. His resume isn't as good as Haglers or Monzon's but head to head I am begining to think he was capable of beating both fighters or at least giving them the fight of their lives.
Hopkins may not be the greatest MW (I have him third after Robinson and Hagler), but he has enough acomplishments in LHW to make a case that he´s greater than Hagler, comparing their entire careers. Hagler beat Duran (who peaked at lightweight), Hearns (almost invincible at welter and superwelter), Mugabi (a superwelter), and a bunch of average to mediocre fighters like Wilford Scipion, Fulgencio Obelmejias and Juan Roldan. And lost to Ray Leonard, a once great welter with one bad eye who´s last fight happened 3 years before. Hopkins Ko´d Tito (a welter who peaked at 154) and Oscar (who peaked at 140). Beat Echols, Joppy, Eastman, Mercado, and the rest were a bunch of average joes. THEN, when his haters were critisizing him about only fighting smaller men, he went straight to 175 and schooled the so called "Legend Killer" Antonio Tarver, 2 time conqueror of Roy Jones (and a very good Light Heavy, not great, but very good). In the last 3 years he has faced Winky, Calzaghe, Tarver, Pavlik and Taylor. All of them are, or were, in several top 10 P4P lists. And he was the underdog in all of those fights, except maybe Taylor I. Let´s take this in consideration: a 43 year old fighter SHOULD NOT be able to dominate a 26 year old champion of solid credentials. THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. And that´s what makes Hopkins so special. If Marvin Hagler and Carlos Monzon had done something similar, I would aknolwledge they´re greater. But the didn´t even try. On the other hand, Hopkins, at 43, is still in the incredible position of being able to ENHANCE his legacy. He could still rematch Calzague, Jones or Taylor. The guy is a ****ing ATG, and a top 25 All Time P4P.
Hagler was a beast, but I don't think anyone beats up Hopkins. You hear me? No one :rasta Seriously, look at his defense, feints, slips, ring movements.. I think he would frustrate Hagler quite a bit.
