here is a list of the fighters he's trained Roy Harris Tony Licata Joey Archer Bob Foster Joe Brown Willie Pep Ezzard Charles Cleveland Williams Manuel Gonzalez Del Flanagan Mike McTigue Melino Bettina Johnny Cesario Bobby Woods Danny Nardico "Peps trainer was Bill Gore of Providence, RI. This was the man who took not only the natural athleticism the timing, the speed, but also the nervous energy of a teenage Guglielmo Papaleo and built a foundation of skill underneath it. Pep was a savant. Gore was the strategist behind him, watching films, analyzing the nightmare style of Sandy Sandler, devising a battle plan to win the rematch." The Ninth God Of War: Willie Pep By Springs Toledo from Sweet Science So if he taught Pep his style as a teen and all the way up through his career as a pro, then he HAS to be one of the greatest trainers ever, right? And does anyone know if there are any books on Bill Gore?
He certainly was one of the best. I tend to measure the worth of a trainer on how he develops a kid from scratch. You see a lot of the big name trainers just work with established star fighters (with mixed results), I think that proves a lot less actually. OK, they must be pretty good, but it says more about their personality and ambition and standing in the business than it does about their pure competence as teachers of boxing. Of course, fighters' own testimonies are valuable too. A lot of credit needs to be given to some great fighters themselves, who learn easily or have a natural instict for boxing.

yeah i agree with pretty much everything you've said. you take a kid, give him a fitting style, take him on up through the amateurs into the pros..... that's a real teacher/trainer. A lot of trainers nowadays just hijack fighters who already have skills and a set style. as good as people say that emanuel steward is, i've never heard of any of his more famous fighters being taught from scratch by him.
thanks, i have Cornermen and unfortunately he isn't one of the cornermen that they dedicate a whole chapter to. he's just mentioned in it. i'm gonna order Friday's Heroes though. Thanks. Have you read Friday's Heroes?
Yes recommended, although Pep and the ghostwriter make Joe Miceli sound like gods gift to the prizering.
