Is boxing a corrupt sport?

Of course it's corrupt. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either stupid or extremely naive.
If it had been honest, boxing history would look very different from what we know now.

But I have no idea what that has to do with JJC snr beating the crap out of poor Mel Taylor. :blood

The thread title is misleading...although people should have bothered to read the opening post.

Boxing is certainly a brutal and ruthless sport. Points victories are deemed okay, but the real prize is the 'knockout'. You're encouraged to hurt and knock the other guy unconscious. Whether the act of boxing itself is 'corrupt' or not is up for debate, as both men are supposed to be willing participants and know what they're doing, but it's not a pleasant sport. Even in this modern era, fighters can still die in the ring. A lot of fans seem to forget that when they rant about desperately wanting to see someone getting hurt or KO'd.

I've always thought that most of the great fighters have a nasty streak. Even the ones that seem charming (like Ray Leonard) and/or soft outside the ring (Pac, for a recent example) can be ruthless in a fight. Ali also had it. It's that nasty, dark streak that gives them a mental edge. Boxing also has positive points, of course, but on the whole it's an unforgiving sport.

 

Unfortunately, there's corruption in all sports.

Competition with any significant stakes involved is corrupt.

Considering that the monetary systyem is rooted in the principle of competition, there's an inherent corruption involved essentially in all aspects business; sports not withstanding.
