What do you mean "IF"? You think Ward will try to make it exciting? He will try to win, and the only way he can do it is to spoil it. You won't see many exchange, it will be a men hug fest.

Manny Pacquiao, Donaire, Marquez, Morales, Barrera, Morales, Hamed and to a certain extent, Gonzales, brought more atention to the lower weights, but the truth is that boxing can live only of the lower weights that is where the best fighters seem to fight each other.
While Loma and GGG are talented af, the top fighters wouldn't fight them, Manny and Floyd where considered the underdogs in their breakthrough fights, that wouldn't happen to either GGG or Loma anytime soon.
The heavyweight division is stacked but they wouldn't face each other because most of them are undefeated and everyone promoter sees their heavy as the best monetary option.
    Cruiser is stacked but underrated.
And from lightweight to light-heavyweight, you have lots of good fighters, but the truth is that they wouldn't face each other, considering they are making millions by fighting low caliber guys.
And the divisions under lightweight are overlooked by most of the fans.
So, yes, if Kovalev vs Ward sucks, that puts boxing in a dangerous situation because is considered by many the biggest fight in boxing besides GGG vs Canelo.
Boxing needs a low blow, a knockdown, these guys needs to survive some time getting paid with what they deserve so they understand they aren't stars or at least not yet.

boxing isn't going to live or die off this fight...the only people that care about it are the people that already care about it....that's enough to sustain it

the average person doesn't have time to follow boxing closely enough to know whats good and what isn't....theres too much going on...too many options these days for a guy to potentially waste his time or follow something the average American doesn't

people that know me know im a diehard boxing fan....that I follow it and love it...I wish you knew how many times they'll say something like "oh I watched the so and so fight the other night.....it stunk"......and I always tell them "if you follow the sport closely on a regular basis you will have a good idea about which matchups should produce...should be entertaining and which ones could be pretty boring....its no different than mma or anything else...some matchups provide fireworks...some don't"

I dunno if Ward-Kovalev is big enough in the eyes of the casuals to be a death knell.

IMO all the damage was done with May/Pac.

If Canelo/GGG were ever made and it stank, kiss boxing goodbye.

Maybe in the U.S. but Japan, Mexico and the U.K. are thriving at the moment.
Boxing wont die out, it will just fade even further into twilight.

I believe US boxing is in trouble if Ward gets beaten. Kovalev needs a KO to win in my opinion, firstly because he is Russian and secondly the US needs a "superstar" now Mayweather has retired, somebody to generate some interest and money, now I don't believe Ward is the man to do it but a Ward win creates positive headlines for US boxing.

Here in the U.K. at this moment in time I don't believe Kovalev Vs Ward will have any impact, I believe this is all about US boxing and what happens next.

As BCS8 said, it's not big enough to carry that kind of potential damage (or benefit). May-Pac was, and that did damage the sport from a U.S. PPV angle.

While GGG-Canelo sucking wouldn't kill it here, it would carry more weight as it's a more popular fight and expected to be a much more fan friendly one.

Pac Floyd didn't damage the sport lmao. Mofos were disappointed in both...particularly in Pac who didn't do what he said what he would do.

depends what your version of "stinks" looks like. if a chess match type fight "stinks" to you then prepare your blanket and snuggle as there's no chance this will be an all action fight, Ward will be trying to control every moment of the fight may even force a stoppage with a head butt, there wont be any haggler - hearns exchanges

Ward Kovalev? Absolutely worth every penny. What kind of question is that?

Pac/Vargas? No Crawford/Postol? Nah Either of Canelo's joints? No

I don't know a single casual that is aware of this fight. Hooters isn't playing it (that's a bad sign as they carry all Pacquiao/Mayweather/Canelo/UFC fights).

Can you name any fight this year besides the kovalev/loma/ward/ggg fights that were on free HBO? HBO's boxing budget got slashed.

    Vargas/Salido was another

I should have clarified. Is it worth it for HBO?
