I ask the question, because the future of the sport worries me. Im just wondering since there are no young fans that will grow into older fans that pay for tickets/PPV.

Im 16, i've been a hardcore fan since like 5th grade. Now, at school kids talk about football, baseball, basketball etc etc. Those fans will grow up and make up the paying fan base of the sport. I have never met a boxing fan, ever thats my age, or close to it. Instead i have to log on to ESB to be able to discuss it.

So my question is... Is it in trouble? Were you guys fans as kids, and developed into the paying fansbase? Or did you guys join later as an adult and we dont have anything to worry about...

Boxing has always been a niche sport. Always has been, always will be. Sure the general public might turn their heads in attention when a mega-fight takes place., but the morning after, the casual viewer wipes their hands of it and moves on like it never happened. That's the reality of it. This was the case in the De La Hoya Era as well as Tyson and Leonard, etc.

That said, if there was ever a time I was worried about the sport's longevity, it would be from around 2008 - 2010. Honestly there seems to be a resurgence in getting some casual viewers back in the last year or so. This is been a good year for the sport and it seems to be gaining momentum again.

Boxing isn't in trouble and I don't think it will be.

Boxing a niche sport? I haven't thought about it like that but I always looked at it as the poor mans sport and because of that, it won't ever die out.

At what age did you get into boxing, and how old are you now?

Boxing hasn't been a mainstream sport in decades, but the sport seems to be on an upswing as of late. Both HBO and Sho are bidding for the rights to carry PPV fights and the financial risk which comes from promoting and staging such big affairs. We now have champions and entertaining fighters from all over the world and big fights are becoming more international affairs as a result. Overall viewership is up.

You will find other fans. I met a great one at a baseball game just the other day. Wait until you get to college and meet people from more than just one area. I'm sure you'll have a good group of friends to watch fights with; I know I did.

alot of older fans scare away younger fans..youve no idea how patronising it is to listen to older fans say yea hes champion now but he wouldnt have cut it back in our day blah blah blah..this is a reason alot of younger guys where im from wont watch the sport

It is. I love my childhood friends (I'm from a really small town) and we will always have a family-like bond. But in college, I was able to find people with similar interests and make new friendships based on those interests.

Look at most weddings. The best man is usually a relative or the college roomate. Just make sure you study, get into college and graduate. At 16 you should worry about that, not the future of boxing.

I'm 16 too, and in my school there seems to be a fair amount of casual boxing fans.
