It seems that boxing is dying on television. HBO won't pay $250,000 to broadcast the most significant heavyweight fight in years.

Please explain? HBO was known for heavyweight boxing. They won't pay $250,000 to broadcast the most significant fight out there?

I hear ZDF in Europe isn't showing boxing either

HBO just realizes that as a whole the American public is not interested in the Klitschkos or David Haye. Outside of the boxing community a lot of people don't even know who they are.

250,000 isn't a lot of money for hbo is it?

I guess boxing fans will have to go somewhere else to see heavyweight boxing:-( question how many of us will go the extra mile to keep up, I bet someone else picks up heavyweights stateside.:happy

The thing is, it isn't the most significant in the eyes of the only people who matter: The public.

Whilst us boxing fans may be happy to watch a Klitschko fight, they've hurt boxing by being involved in some of the most awful fights in recent years. Boxing right now needs good cards to keep fans involved. The Klitschko's don't offer that, so whilst their bouts may be historically important, HBO would be better off spending that $250,000 on guys they know will actually turn up and put on a show. Boxing isn't just a sport, it's entertainment too and HBO have to show entertaining fights. There is no guarentee that will be the case any time a Klitschko steps into the ring.

I find this suprising and a bad showing from HBO. I suppose it reflects the insularitory of the US, they usually like to completely ignore foreign fighters. Obviously Pacquaio has broken through but foreign champions nearly always get less exposure. I'd guarantee if there was an American in the other corner it would be shown

Having said all that it is K2's job to sell the fight and they haven't doen a good job of promoting themselves state side. Presumably they can sell the fight to Showtime or someone for less dollars

I think everyone too busy hanging on the edge of their seats with Mayweather-Pacquiao to care about other fights, this match-up is getting so much attention, its the one everyone wants to see. Not much attention is given to other fights beasue of this.

It is highly unlikely that either of the Klitschkos will ever be involved in an entertaining fight to the casual boxing/sports fan. I get bored with watching them and I like Wlad.

In the US? Absolutely, has been for years due to many factors. Began with Tuesday Night Fights dying a slow death.

Boxing is simply not a popular sport in this country anymore. Casual fans only know about Mayweather and Pac because of the Oscar PPV connection. Oscar was huge in America and people loved to watch him and anyone even remotely associated....god knows why. His crossover appeal and Tyson's antics kept the sport mainstream way longer than it otherwise would have.

In terms of Heavyweights, HBO doesn't want to go Germany to cover K-Brother fights. Thats why they had such a huge hard on for Arreola, he fights in America. It has dick to with how exciting anyone is..seriously, this is a network that was fully behind alphabet circle jerks Rahman, Ruiz, Toney, and before his King contract problems, Chris Byrd.
