Is boxing more of an instinctive sport or a thinking sport?

When they say its instinctive they mean it is now not when they first started, your not going to watch them fight the first few times and see them doing all the things theyre doing now it comes instinctive with practice, like driving a car sometimes when your beginning you get confused about all the things you have to do when starting it up but after a while you dont even think about it and when you think about it its hard for you to remember exactly what you did while you were on autopilot because its become so normal trying to think of what you did is hard becuase you havnt had to in so long

Exactly. Instinct is made by repetition, in the gym.

most of what a good fighter does not come natural. Leaning back from punches..windmill punches, those come natural. The trick is to train train train, build muscle memory, rep, repeat..learn it in shadow boxing..on the bag..on mitts...light minimal contact sparring, than full sparring..learn what you have to do until it becomes second nature...make it "instinctive" even though you are doing things that you would not do in a state of nature.
