a greater percentage of the German public may be boxing fans now, but there still far more boxing fans in the U.S surely? And the American fans are I believe (by and large) far more knowledgeable than their German counterparts!

All this is is proof that when you put on boxing matches on broadcast TV, people will watch. I started watching boxing myself when Fox TV started having Saturday night fights following the Tyson-McNeely fight. Casual fans will tune in if its free. Look at Strikeforce on CBS. That gets good ratings for an MMA organization that only has a few of the name fighters in the sport. Gary Shaw should be trying to get his boxers on CBS as well as his mixed martial artists.

With ARD ZDF and RTL there are 3 main Channel which are broadcasting Boxing thats the main factor why boxing is very popluar here.
Another reason ist the sucess of the Klitsckos and Abraham.
A lot of the earlier Klitschko fights 10 years ago were broadcasted in free TV.

    I agree on this.
Boxing is popular here but the real big stars like Pacquaio ,Cotto, Mosley, Williams, Bute or Hopkins are mostly unknown.

I think that both countries have a great history in boxing and it became very popular in germany at the time Maske and Michaelczewski fought their big fights. Now there are the Klitschko-brothers, Felix Sturm and Arthur Abraham for example.

The Klitschkos can sell 70.000 seats for their fights in germany and the fights in TV are always watched by millions.

But it´s hard to compare this to america where many more fights happen and venues like the MGM or the MSG host big events during the whole year.

Yeah I think Asians, Hispanics, and Germans watch it more than we do now.

Seeing this thread reminded me of something in the early '70s. Was working in Germany, and one of the crew told me about a top-notch German amateur (with a long Germanic name that escapes me, for the moment) that I had to see. So, on a day off, went to a local card.

The buzz in the arena was all about him, how he was sure-fire to be a pro champ and put Germany back on the map. So, I had some pre-conceived notion of seeing some incarnation of Max Schmeling and Buba Scholz.

To my astonishment, he was a black boxer. Decimated his opponent, 'n spoke impeccable German in a post-fight interview. Learned from a reporter, he was the son of a German woman 'n a black American GI, who split for the States. The son adopted his mother's name.

Lost track of the kid after I left.
