I was just looking at a tennis match (Nadal vs. some unknown guy) and realised that in tennis, just like in soccer and many other sports it is inevitable that if you want to become the best you have to beat the best. One of the reasons of course is that they have competitions. So there just simply doesn't exist such thing as ''ducking''. I don't know what kind of a discussion will follow but I thought it is quite an interesting question to find out if it can be solved and if so, how. I realise we are in the general forum and there are youngsters, haters, dickheads etc. here. But I'm looking forward to some nice contributions. Peace!
Of course, agreeing who the top man in the division was would be an easier affair if they actually fought each other. The subjective nature of scoring is a different issue from fights not being made. The difference is probably that boxing is one of the only sports where indivduals can make more money from persuing their own self interest, than they can make as part of a collective that, at least obstensibly, aims for the interest of the sport as a whole. Ie. Rafael Nadal could leave the ITF and go play tennis matches in Spain against opponents that he invited over and paid a fee to. But he wouldn't make nearly as much money as he does now.
C Fury believe me judges in football have the same enormous influence in football as in boxing unfortunately
If it wasn't for the nationalists and the fan groupies the people would have a much more focused and narrow tolerance of the ridiculous money grabbing and pussified distance navigating some of these hustler boxers try to get away with. With them in the picture there will never be true prestige in the sport of boxing because the snakes will always have a place to hide.
Maybe holding tournaments between the belt holders and a "largest perceived threat" in the division without a title to unify and identify a best fighter... but at the same time that ****s over guys maybe who have worked their way into a #1 ranking who might not be perceived the "largest perceived threat". There's no cut and dry solution, the fighters themselves would just willingly have to take the toughest fights.
Not sure about that although it does happen. Although boxing is a sport when the loser has more excuses than in any other sport. Its odd because this is why boxing was partly conceived, to settle it in the ring mano o mano w/o the excuses. The Tennessee Titans lost to the Ravens two weeks ago due mainly to a horrible call. You'll never hear from it again
Yes. As far as I know. Most other sports have tournaments (or playoffs) that decide this kind of thing. Other fighting sports like the UFC doesn't seem to have this problem. Hell even the WWE doesn't have this problem. Yes, boxing does appear to be the only sport.
The answer is simple. The fighters that duck dangerous opponents, such as Roy Jones jr , Floyd Mayweather & Joe Calzaghe, will NEVER be regarded among boxings elite for that very reason. Its their own fault that their legacies will be tarnished forever for not facing the best
If you watch college football it is really similar to boxing. resume's, eye test, rankings, only 1 title though
