Jack Dempsey, Max Schmeling, Jimmy McClarnin, Larry Holmes, George Foreman and plenty of others all did well after their careers ended.

It is tough and dangerous but so is life. It’s a choice of whether the risk is worth the reward. If you think it is then have at it.

 

I think a lot of people just cannot handle being past prime and not able to do the things they one could, Hatton is your main example from recently. The guy was still healthy and fit compared to the vast majority of people, but just didn’t seemed to be able to handle the normal life.
As for actual boxing, would I want my son to do it? I’d like him to just look after his health and be able to defend himself, so maybe up to a point but that’s all.

 

For some yes. For others no.

look at how well Andre Ward is doing post retirement. I don’t like his fighting style but he seems happy.

Bernard Hopkins would probably be in prison or dead if it wasn’t for boxing.

yes, a lot of them go broke but that is due to women and not saving properly and over spending.

some guys fight too long and end up with Cte.

fighters need better financial literacy and tax and investment advice. They need to also be told when to retire so they don’t end up brain damaged

 

For boxers, sometimes. For viewers, not so much.

 

Floyd was right. Nothing cool about getting hit. Now if he had just taken care of his money.

Boxing has actually saved many lives in turn. Physically and mentally. Even for those who are not professional.

 

The worst thing about Boxing is the hard sparring. According to many top Muay Thai fighters they don't actually do any hard sparring, except for shin conditioning and mits .

A lot of Boxing gyms, unfortunately, seem to encourage hard sparring.

 

Professional boxers and professional wrestlers have probably the highest per capita premature mortality rate of pretty much any profession (outside maybe roofers and coal miners) over the last century. Between overdoses, suicides, and CTE related causes (impaired judgment leading to DUI crashes, etc)

 

For every tragic story there is someone who won: Marcos Maidana, Gabe Rosado, Darren Barker, Sergio Martinez, Juan Francisco Estrada, Carl Froch and so on.
These are just guys that popped into my head, and I know some of them are still active, but from what I know they all have gotten to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

IMO, most will leave the sport with some sort of injuries, but there are plenty of guys who make their money and get to enjoy a good life because of it.
