I guess you'd get some good energy from the honey and banana.
Do you load up on carbs on the day of the race or do you carb load from 3 days before while you taper off?
Training with low glycogen stores can improve your response to exercise and your ability to replenish those stores quickly but if you did that all the time the mental strain would be too much for most and it would be hard to get high quality intense training in...
That's from my understanding so I'd be hesitant to advise any athlete to follow a diet that doesn't place a large emphasis on carbs. If you have the diet working for you though then well done :good

I guess different peoples bodies react differently to different diets.

To an extent, most nutritional principles are universal it's just that the body is adaptable. You could make anything work for you but it's about performance and getting the best out of yourself. If someone feels they have energy and an advantage on this sort of diet then more power to them.
What isn't disputable is the fact that your body burns carbohydrates at high exercise intensities, the longer the distance the lower the intensity by nature so as it goes on you use protein and fat to give you a large part of your energy. Extra protein is helpful as a fuel for longer distances so that's the only type of athlete i'd advise to take in extra protein.
That's probably why El Puma can get it to work for him, I'm not really a fan of the idea of training in a perpetually glycogen depleted state though.

    Spot on. I have issues:lol:

I ate half a sweet potato on race day (half marathon in the snow) I wouldn't recommend people go to this extreme as I have been but easing into Paleo is a good start I feel.

I also mix in intermittent fasting as well. I believe the mind can force the body to do many unbelievable things simply by will.

Ask away, gentlemen...I am here now.

What's happened with your body weight and composition with the diet, and how long have you been on it?
I'm of the opinion that your nutrition should make it as easy as possible for your training and recovery. Is it a psychological/mental toughness thing for you, this diet?

-Body recovers much quicker. I can go full out on a CrossFit WOD and still get in a long run after wards.

-Body odor from excessive peanut butter and processed crap (protein powder) non existant

-Sleep is better and people mistake me fro 24-26. I am 32 years old.

-Body is leaner and more muscular looking . A marathon runner in a sprinter's body. Weight has dropped but it was only the excess garbage that peanut butter and protein powders left me with. It's true what they say about not needing as much protein as the Muscle and Fitness crowd would have you believe

-Drinking coffee black gives it an extra kick without the crash if it came with sugar or diary. It also gives me the full benefits of it's anti-oxidants.

-I heal quicker (cuts, aches, chewed nails:lol:)

    lefty,

I am doing Paleo the way I am because I have found during my last Ultra that I just couldn't force myself to eat, I was so exhausted. No hunger...yet no energy despite all the fat (peanut butter) protien powder and banana bread I was eating prior. I determined recently I was eating wrong when I found myself getting winded during CrossFit despite my extensive cardio training. I was strong as hell, sure. But, I wasn't getting the most I felt my body has to offer.

Then we had a 30 day Paleo challenge at CrossFit. That's when I researched what it was (pros and cons) and tried it out. I put complete faith in it and the modifications I made to fit my needs.

The proof of whether it is truly effective will come beginning March 31st when I do my 50k and a half marathon the next day.

Training has gone well but as we(you and I) who are in the know, know...comps are a different beast:good

A banana...or two with a handful of almonds. But that's not often since I like to use coffee to access my fat stores and run on that till about 10 am. ( I wake up at 5)

I am just over 5'8 and in the mid to low 150lbs. I mention that bc it has taken me years of torture from making weight for wrestling and boxing and experimenting what works for me after much research and many failures.

Long story short, eat lots of good fats and protein (not powder) along with tons of veggies and you will feel, perform and look better.

Make it simple, eat fruit, grab a handful of almond or boil some eggs the night before to have a quick breakfast.

    Hope this helps.

Fruit and veggies have natural carbs our bodies have used for thousands of years. It took me two weeks of feeling sluggish but the coffee helped me through it.

    Thanks for the response Puma.
Yeah protein powders are a waste of money and energy, your body can only use up to about 20-25 grams at a time at the very most, anything in excess is used for energy. It's a poor energy source and raises your bodies temperature which obviously isn't good if you want to stay hydrated and perform at your best. I do like the idea of the paleo diet to an extent but I think breads and pastas etc. Definetly have a place in an athletes diet. There's the practical problem of digesting foods with a lot of fibre as well, simple sugars before and after exercise seem to be ideal.
Personally I don't believe in subscribing to a particular diet, your energy needs change from day to day so if people knew about nutrition and the effects of different things at different times it would be fine if they knew their requirements. You can eat poorly on any diet, I think if you eliminate certain foods you just increase your chances of not achieving optimal nutrition, I don't believe in 'Bad' foods, food is just energy and man throughout time has eaten whatever's available to him. The problem these days is excess consumption and elimination of certain foods IMO. Variety is the key and I think the paleo diet is pretty good in that regard.
Good luck with your comp mate, glad it's you rather than me doing 50km :thumbsup
