"Even though Calderon is a southpaw and Pep was not, the stylistic similarities run deep. They’re slick defensive specialists with minimal pop in their mitts. Pep is considered one of the very greatest pure boxers of all-time because he defeated so many top fighters without the luxury of being able to hurt them. Calderon is one of the greatest pure boxers of his day (as the poor man’s Pep, he doesn’t get any “all-time” designation), also carving out a place among boxing’s elite despite shooting blanks.

But both eventually came up against younger, taller, vicious hitting foes and lost their crowns by upset knockouts. In October 1948, Saddler stopped Pep in the fourth round to claim the featherweight championship, handing him only his second defeat in 136 fights. Calderon was unbeaten in 35 bouts when a poor man’s Saddler, the all-offense Segura, convinced him to stay down on one knee last August."

Its a interesting comparison and there are definately similarities. I think Calderon being 36 and after a long career and amatuer career having to deal with a big, strong and younger fighter in Segura is what is his biggest challenge. Pep already had a long career too before fighting Saddler, but Saddler did also. I think there is more that seperates Ivan and Gio as far as where they are in their careers.

It could be.Depends how Calderon performs in the rematch though.

Im sure if we all saw Pep/Saddler 1 live we would all think Pep has no chance in the rematch just like we all think Calderon has no chance this saturday.

What I dont like about Calderon, is he does too much moving, not enough sticking.

I felt against Segura, that Calderon was too defensive at times, but that when he was more offensive, he was offensive out of desperation, as though when he was being too defensive he was surrendering the momentum to Segura, and so the desperate offense was an effort to halt Segura's momentum, which he(Segura) was able to get going, because Calderon had been being too defensive.

Calderon doesn't have enough of a medium between defense and offense imo.

I agree with this aswell as both Calderon & Pep were in decline going against the punchers in Saddler & Segura. Saddler is arguably the best fw puncher of all times too. Segura not the best in his but still very dangerous.
