hopkins, jones and johnson wouldnt fight him not because they where scared but because he wasnt a massive draw outside of the uk. if he had his lacy at 21 he would have been the draw :deal

if i called out jones and hopkins do you think they would have listened?
you have to chase fights with the big dogs if you want them.

calzaghe wasn't courting the US networks and wasn't building a worldwide fanbase by fighting in the states - which in turn would have garnered the interest of the networks.

nobody knew him over there so he was a high risk, low reward fighter for the two best fighters of his era.

    Difficult to say.

Questions about HOF inclusion always have to be answered twice - once for what inclusion should be in an ideal world, and secondly for what inclusion unfortunately is in reality.

In an ideal world, no, Joe Calzaghe would not be immortalized in the Hall Of Fame because he spent 9 years as a champion fighting terrible opposition (1997-2006), had 2 meaningful wins (Lacy & Kessler, even though Lacy wasn't much cop really), got a workrate-based decision he didn't deserve over a stamina-shorn past-prime version of a great fighter (Hopkins), and that's it. Not a "great" career by any definition.

But, of course, the argument is that in reality for whatever reason, the entry requirements for the HOF are so low that they have inducted guys like Barry McGuigan (I think only 3 world title fight wins) and Kostya Tszyu (a guy whose 2nd best ever win was over either Sharmba Mitchell or Miguel Angel Gonzalez), so on that basis yes Calzaghe probably should/will be inducted because his achievements are no worse than those of McGuigan or Tszyu.

So probably yes, sadly. I have no idea why they have cheapened the HOF the way they have done. They should create an EHOF (Elite Hall Of Fame) to separate the Ali's and the Sugar Ray's from the McGuigan's and the Calzaghe's, because the void is MASSIVE.

    :patsch Proven how???

    - Going to a split decision in his prime with Robin Reid... a guy who was handily beaten by a 68 year old Sugarboy Malinga in the same time period

    - Beating Mikkel Kessler around 8 rounds to 4, before Andre Ward won every single round against Kessler

    - Merely replicating a feat against Hopkins that Jermain Taylor had already done twice, ie outworking a past-prime Hopkins to an ugly points decision

How does this prove this guy was "one of the greatest H2H"??? Ridiculous, ******ed comment with no evidence whatsoever to back it up.

One of the greatest H2H was Sugar Ray Leonard.

Ray Leonard stopped a prime Thomas Hearns, dazzled Roberto Duran in their rematch, stopped a prime Wilfred Benitez, and outpointed Marvin Hagler.

THAT is how you earn the title of one of the greatest H2H... by beating great fighters in impressive fashion.

Not going to ****ing SDs with Robin Reid, failing to beat Kessler as convincingly as one of his contemporaries, and replicating a feat already done twice by Jermain Taylor.

You need to study boxing man, honestly.

    :patsch:patsch:patsch

But at least it wasn't his fault that he didn't get the big fights at the time... The cherrypicking and fighting over the hill greats, wich he's most accused of clearly wasn't entirely his fault.

Incorrect! Calzaghe was trying to get exposure in America but happened to stink the place out when Showtime took an interest in him therefore blowing his chance when it was given to him.

I was at the MEN arena when on the Tyson /Francis undercard where Calzaghe stank the place out with a mediocre performance against a mediocre David Starrie a fight that was being featured on showtime.

    .

i agree and i disagree. ****** certainly has a lot to answer for, but at the same time hatton smelled the bull**** and decided to take hold of his own career.
there's no reason why joe couldn't have done the same, and his take on things says pretty strongly that he was happy to go with the flow.

it was poetic justice when he scuttled from ****** though

one fight doesn't blow a fighter's career and opportunities - especially when he's winning.
beating someone like joppy, rather than david starrie, would have given him a nice followup to the lacy win - no matter how he did it.

He beat Hopkins, Eubank, Kessler, Reid and Bika. Good wins, but is that enough to go to the HOF?
