The wbo practically became "legit" (for a boxing abc) in the 90's. The british and european boxers contributed greatly to this, just like the american title holders did with the u.s. based ibf, 5 years ahead of the wbo. As usual, the americans, particularly HBO and that rubbish magazine The Ring were simply slow to catch on with the wbo.

Hamed, DM and of course Sugar Joe were fantastic future-HOF wbo champions who effectively unified & beat all the other title holders. De la Hoya annihilated Ruelas in a unification match, and Barrea had an awesome reign as wbo 122lb champion. Eubank had a long, sometimes controversial title run and made a fortune.

However, the wbo's heavyweight title notoriously struggled for any prestige or recognition throughout the 90's. Moorer vacated because it was holding him back, Bowe vacated the title before the Holyfield rubber match because Holyfield didn't recognise it, & Akinwande vacated to go for Lewis's title. Tyson & Lewis didn't need the wbo heavyweight title just like the elite don't need any trinket today.

In Japan I dont think either the wbo or ibf are recognised.

Possible top 100 ATG, but thats a stretch, most people wouldn't have him in there at all. Definitely HOF though.

Yes Calzaghe is a HOF and an ATG. He's a guy who would be great in any era.

This is utter crap. Do you actually believe this?

Calzaghe's fights against Mitchell and Brewer were broadcast on Showtime. The Showtime team even came to the UK to cover the fights from ringside.
So Calzaghe clearly had the interest of the networks.

Showtime were desperate for Calzaghe to fights Hopkins. They even set up a meeting with Hopkins' representatives. This indicts Calzaghe was known to the people that mattered.

Obviously the fans didn't know who Joe was but fighting Hopkins would have changed that.

Loyal-Punch-Bag, you keep getting it wrong. If you use the McGuigan rule then Calzaghe is more than borderline, he would be well above. How stupid are you?
Tell me Loyal-Punch-Bag, do you know any of these Calzaghe opponents? What they achieved, who they beat, where they were rated etc.
Veit, Mkertchyan, Starie, Reid, Woodhall, Mitchell. Do you know any of them?
