Could have been considered great, and also had the tools to do it. He unfortunately had Frank Warren for a promoter. His choice with that though. So, just very good.
Brit fans should make their own esb and ban all the haters of Calzaghe. There is too much hate for Calzaghe around here.
:nono Tarver and Hatton are not 'B' level fighters. so isn't Johnson of recent years. about Hamed - i don't know , jmm didn't want any business with him , so he is left unchecked. Barrera beat him with a little margin in one fight , so what , that doesn't make him a 'B' level fighter , because so did Barrera with Morales in 2 of their 3 encounters. but you still consider Moralles an 'A' level , don't you ? about Hopkins , he surely doesn't deserve more than Tarver. Tarver's resume is the who's who of the 175 in recent years , fighting anyone with talent who agreed to fight him. DawsonX2 , Johnson X 2 , Jones X3 , Griffin , Reggie Johnson , Harding X2 , Woods. :nut wow ! that's a 'B' level fighter. Hatton proved himself by beating tszyu and the man who beat tszyu. that's no 'B' level. back to the core of your question : Calzaghe is neither GREAT nor VERY GOOD. only GOOD. he is too unchecked and picky to ever be regarded more than GOOD , and the explanations for it were already known and written in this forum. if he'd beat dawson convincingly it will make me change my mind. wins over the likes of little, liles, reggie johnson or even a close loss (or win) to jones in his better days would have made me think otherwise , but we can't go back to the past , and Calzaghe should not be regarded VERY GOOD , simply because we don't know that he is - his legacy is mainly made of fantasy fights that will never happen. the fights that did happen - does not show he is anything more than a mere 'GOOD'. whatever his reasons of him not making important fights are.
In terms of talent, I can't find many better. He may not have been the best talent wise, but to attempt to name a better talent is tough. He slaps? Irrelevant. "Great"? Like, Ali, Louis, Lewis, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield etc? No. His legacy, in that respect, suffered by fighting in the UK too often.
