I don't hate Calzaghe, but I hate Calzaghe threads. Yet, just like a car accident, I look all the time.

I rooted for JC during the Hopkins fight, I wasn't on ESB at the time, but I had no idea the amount of hype Calzaghe was getting. To me, he was a regional fighter who amassed a big record over a long time fighting mainly sub par competition, the Kessler win being his way of stepping it up somewhat. I was rooting for him because I wanted to see Hopkins lose, and I like the feel good story of it all.

When he fought Jones, I said what is he doing that for?

When he retired, I said..... why? There's so much more to do. He can do it.

It wasn't until I came on ESB that I saw the battle raging, and after reading thru this thread it seems the same arguments are going round and round for years.

My opinion is this. Joe Calzaghe was a terrific fighter who, for whatever reason, never fought the best competition. Blame who you want. It doesn't matter. There are many, many reasons why fights don't get made. He fought he fought, and he fought them when he fought them. His retirement seems permanent, so his record will remain static.

I'll always classify him as a "What could have been" guy as opposed to a guy who proved his accurate worth. And I think he will not get the respect or historical accolades he could have gotten.

You'd have to do that, would you ?

Then somebody would have to correct you, and point out that BHop was the one who did the actual ducking when he was in his prime.

Calzaghe's main problem is he never fought anyone who was good, when they were in their prime.

Other than that in no particular order he has the following downsides:

    • He sounds dumb and boring(I don't mean the accent)
    • His Father is an annoying little spider
    • His girlfriend looks like a transsexual

    Not relly.

He's just unfamiliar with the facts.

Calzaghe demonstrated very decent power in his early career.

The problem was his hands. They became more fragile, hence he altered his style to protect them them.

From his pro debut till he took the title from Eubank, he went 22-0-0 with 21 KO's. 10 of those came in the first round and another 6 in the second round.

That's a higher and quicker KO ratio than Iron Mike, at the same point in his career.

    Since capturing the title,

5 of his first 14 defences went the distance (35 %)

    5 of his next 7 defences went to 12 rounds. (71 %)

His skills improved but his body and hands were in decline.

It's because he's white and shits in the face of the logic that black and hispanic fighters are the best. Same reason Manny Pac is hated.

It's because he's cocky and arrogant.

Come on, really? Pac has legions and legions of fans. There are people who hate him, but I'm not one, so I can't speak for others, but I doubt its because he isn't black or hispanic. That's a cop out.

My impression is the same as for Calzaghe. It's his fans that really turn them off, not necessarily the man himself..... Unless your a PBF fan..... they hate him unconditionally it seems.

In this case, Pac at least has the background and body of work to support many of his fans claims.

Some people hate Calzaghe simply because he is a dick.

THe reason im not big on Calzaghe is cause in his prime he never ventured out of europe for big fights, and he didnt fight big names until they were old. I think Joe is a borderling great fighter , but his wins over Hopkins and Jones should have * next to it. I think Hopkins also gave that fight away( i had Calzaghe by 1). Hard core fans know that he wasnt as great as it looks in the record booksrecord , but i dont like that many years down the line people are gonna probably rate him higher than he deserves to be, people that dont know what most knowledgeable fans today know.

By the way i think Calzaghe was a good puncher at SM he had some good kos, i think it was his hands that caused him to not throw real hard punches at LH and become more of a volume puncher.

The deal with showtime wasn't good to begin with either. It was a 3 fight deal which involved fighting Calzaghe and Harry Simon who was a very dangerous fighter himself. So unsuprisingly Hopkins didn't agree to the deal. Might as well say he was avoiding Harry Simon as well as he was a part of the deal.

I used to be a big Calzaghe fan but his constant poor level of opposition during 2004-2005 turned me off him. He had so much potential and I still think he under acheived during his career.

calzaghe should have fought many many more B class fighters instead of the /C and D class fighters that litter his resume.

that is warren looking to pay **** all for his opponents, instead of just pay that little bit more .

then his career would have been fine.

if calzaghe had ventured out of europe in his prime to fight in america, if he had stayed at 168 where he fought his whole career bar his last 2 fights he would have had to have imported a european to america to fight because sadly there were no top class 168 fighters from america in calzaghe`s prime who he ducked.

as it is critisim is justified because of all the real no hopers that warren lined up, when in reality there was no danger to calzaghe`s 0 with him fighting B class opposition, mixed with the occasional A which warren would have had to pay for.

Its as near as damn it carved in stone that B Hop and RJJ avoided him in the early part of this decade so whats he supposed to do to gain some respect from haters? You can only fight whos willing to fight you. High risk low reward springs to mind.

I will go on record to say if Calzaghe was American he wouldnt be loved by all but by most. its just how things are, I will admit my self I support British fighters (bar froch) more than american and they do the same

As for the ducking thing, yes the fight was arranged for hopkins and calzaghe in 01/02 and hopkins went out in the last min but you cant blame hopkins, calzaghe had a shite promoter and just didnt have the name to make the fight worthwhile

Not so sure Ifc. It's really not like that here in America. There are a few guys who (in certain peoples minds) fit the bill of guys who avoid top competition. Right or wrong. Chad Dawson and Kelly Pavlik. They are also considered good fighters by many and are considered highly overrated by others. Both are also 2 of the most villified.
