    Spot on.

    He was protecting his hands.

He could still stand back plant and wack when he had to. He hit Kessler with some pretty big shots!

No... because of his 0 mainly... lets be honest.

People go on about him not fighting the best until late on or his punching technique etc but in reality (& you all know this in your heart) nobody would let that **** bother them as much as they do if they had only one fight of his to look back on were he never had his hand raised.

I know this because I used to feel the exact same way about Chris Eubank... now I have loads of respect for the man.

It is what it is I suppose.

He has a lot of haters because pretty much all the elite/big name fighters do.

People like to use the xenophobia/skin-color excuse (it seems to only be constantly brought up for Calzaghe and Klitschko, not other guys like Hatton and Tszyu) but guys like De La Hoya & Mayweather are hated by many too. Pacquiao's getting his share nowadays too.

The top fighters are always going to have big fans and big detractors as well.

BULL****!!! he dosnt run his mouth like Floyd, before he fought Lacy nobody has even heard of him.
Even if he didnt fight many big name opponents that still doesn't justify the hate he's getting here.
The only justification for the hate is because he won vs all the back fighters he fought when he was supposed to loose.

I never liked his style , asthetically speaking. Also he's a bit of a dick , especially now hes retired ( boxing is dying etc )

he does get a lot of **** though , probably mostly undeserved.

    Stop playing the race card.

Calfaggy only has himself to blame that he chose to cocoon himself from any real challenge for so many years, that his legacy gets questioned.

It is the same with Floyd, he has detractors galore because people feel he is cherry picking.

Imagine if some halfwit comes in and suggests the reason for the Floyd hate is racial because of what he did to non-African Americans in Gatti, Hatton, and JMM.

Dude, its true that Calzaghe didnt fight many big names like he should have in his prime but that still doesnt justify the hate that hes gettin, like u calling him "Calfaggy".

I was inspired by your avatar and by that stupid diamond earring I saw him wearing in a photo posted on this forum in recent days.

I think it's mostly down to the fact he retired undefeated and he didn't face Hopkins or Jones until very late in his and there careers. And no matter what way you look at it, the majority of American's don't like him and will never like him.
Calzaghe has never been liked, he only became popular in the UK after the Lacey bout, and even then they were predicting him to get beaten. I think the Hopkins and Jones bouts could have happened a few years earlier, him and Warren could have gone to the US a good few years before Calzaghe eventually did. But, I think all parties were to blame, Warren for not taking the risk, Calzaghe for not threatening to leave Warren earlier, Jones/Hopkins - Calzaghe was very high risk at the time, with very little reward, but they still didn't take the risk.
What I will say about Calzaghe, although his biggest wins came after the Lacey win. The guy must have soo much motivation. Before the Lacey bout, he makes defense after defense of his title, with very little recognition from the British public. I remember when everyone started writing him off as shot, and it was only a matter of time before he was beaten after a number of sloppy performances. But he proved everyone wrong, including the British boxing experts, and went onto have the most successful 4-5 years of his career.

I think he can be summed up quite simply.

Gifted fighter badly managed, but undeniably, by any who follow the sport with any dedication, a top 5 fighter of his generation.

His boxing record could be better sure. But I'd tend to blame the sport of boxing and it's politics rather than Calzaghe. A true general of the ring and absolute nightmare for anyone in the history of the sport to fight.

Dude. That's ridiculous. Or as my british cousins would say, bollocks. Do you really think the only people who dislike calzaghe on esb are black? Most americans know jack**** about JC or his personality, he gets zero media coverage here. So its not that either. Point is, for the most part, it's his fans who breed the resentment. And not the normal fans. Its the ones who try to tout him as an atg. Yes, the hate cup has runneth over, but no more so than the love cup.

He's hated because he's a damned good fighter. Look up every fighter who accomplished something in this sport and you'll see some people criticizing them, from Muhammad Ali to Sweet Pea to Willie Pep to Roy Jones to Floyd Mayweather on down. Some fighters have more detractors than others, but nobody's universally loved.

It just comes with the territory. People don't bother to try and knock down someone who's not good enough to be on some sort of pedestal in the first place.

No, I believe it is because many people view him as a zero-protector who didn't chase the best opponents in his career.
