Is Calzaghe`s stamina & workrate unparalleled for his age (36)

I was recently thinking about how Calzaghe is able to continually press fights, coming forward & throwing a huge number of punches usually right the way thru to the final bell... it is a really hard thing to do at ANY stage in ANY fighters career but when you consider that the guy is 36 yrs old & he can still force the pace like this, it really is quite astonishing.

The only other current fighter that can do likewise is Manny Pacquiao but he is 29 going on 30 & Joe is 36 going on 37... its highly doubtfull that Pac will even be still boxing at 36 never mind at the same frantic pace.

Has there ever been another boxer that can keep that sort of pace at that sort of age ?

I cant think of one right now.

    :huh

I don't think there are any active fighters around the same age who can match Joe for workrate and stamina - and its not even close. Historically, I'm not sure.

Even if you take age out of the question, it's highly unlikely that anyone can match Calzaghe's levels of fitness and work-rate.

They are unbelievable for a guy that old in a higher weight class.Actively it's probably the best. All time probably one of the best ones.

Yeah Calzaghe and his father push very hard in their preperation and Calzaghe is rarely out of shape between fights. His stamina and workrate are major weapons and I can't think of a fighter who comes close to matching Joe.

Of active boxers I think he is a class apart in that respect. Historically quite a few were of that level, but few if any have held that level of fitness into their late 30's.

Usually speed and punch out put are the first things to go. Its not uncommon to see defensive based fighters who have a lot of physical strength and power go onto their late 30s, but it is extremly uncommon with quick guys.

Thats why fighters at lower weights tend to peak at a younger age than heavier guys.

Glen Johnson's workrate is also insane. Unfortunately for him he is much slower than Calzaghe.

Glen Johnson must be pushing on 40. The man never stops coming, ever. Looks like he could go for 20 rounds.

The only other guy currently fighting whom I would consider close to Joe is Vitali Klitschko. Of course, you have to consider Vitali is much heavier than Calz and thus will throw less punches than Calzaghe would. That said, VK averaged something like 70+ punches/round against Sam Peter to Joe's 80+/round against Jones. Vitali is 37.5 years old to Joe's approximately 36.5 years old.

VK's workrate is not equal to Joe's but I felt he should get some props on this issue.

I'm not sure about historical comparisons. It is incredible how furious Joe is able to pace his fights even at his advanced age. The way that he made BHop and Roy look is not something that any other possible opponents could have done. Ask Trinidad or Pavlik.

calzaghe must be onoe of the best conditioned fighters at a heavier weight...ever...regardless of his age.....which goes to show the oft derided enzo cal. must know a thing or two about training a fighter...
