Had Hopkins fought Wright at MW, as he was supposed to, a win against Winky would have meant a lot...
I'm guessing that you never saw either fights or maybe if you did, just once. I've seen both fights plenty of times. Althought JT might've technically won both fights, Hopkins was the much more effective fighter who picked his spots a lot better and landed the much cleaner shots. The rounds Hopkins lost, he lost because he was inactive. The rounds he won, he won because he was landing his crisp, counter right hand leads time and time again.
Oh, please, this is hindsight. If i'm not mistaken, Wright was the betting favorite. And only because you know the outcome do you say the fight was a cake walk for Hopkins. There were questions whether Hopkins would finally show his age. There were questions how he would crack Wright's defense and overcome his stiff jab and work rate. Yes, Hopkins did have the weight advantage but please don't make it sound like Wright was some chump. Wright hadn't lost a fight in 7.5 years before fighting Hopkins. He was a top 5 P4P fighter before fighting Hopkins. Please man, try to be a bit more objective.
As for the topic at hand, no i don't think Joe C is scared of Hopkins nor do i think Hopkins is scared of Joe C. I think both fighters want to genuinely get it on and each feels confident about their chances. And that's good because that means there's a good chance of this fight happening.
Tarver and Wright were the betting favourites because dumbass Americans actually thought they were going to win. Remember Tito was heavy favourite going into Hopkins and Wright ? Yet anyone worth their salt knew that he was going to lose, and badly. Hopkins fought wright at 170, thats 16lbs over what Wright is natural at. Imagine if Joe decided to put on that extra 16 and fight from 168 to 185, he'd be fighting at Cruiser. Wright was fat and lethargic, the win by Hopkins was **** all. He was a top 5 fighter at lmw and middle but NOT at lhw. The fact is, Hopkins best wins were over welterweights who had NO BUSINESS being at that weight division. Hopkins aint stupid, he knew he would win those fights thats why he completely skipped 168 to avoid REAL threats like Calzaghe and Kessler to fight Wright (previously mentioned) and Antonio Tarver who is the single worst ever "elite" fighter - Lost to Harding and Glen Johnson. As soon as Hopkins did actually face a real middlweight contender he lost. Twice.
he may have been, lacy was also slight favourite over calzaghe, shows how much the bookies know really. huh, cakewalk, that fits nicely when you consider how wright bulked himself up for this fight. look, i never said wright was a chump, just that he had no right to be fighting up at LHW, he looked nothing like his normal self up there, it completely devalues the win. oh, and rummy, kessler at 168lbs is a much better fighter than winky at 170. :deal
The betting lines are a good indicator of how the public views a fight. They might not be completely accurate but it's a good indicator. If a fighter is favored, that means he's favored for a reason. Second, i had no idea Wright would dominate Tito. It was a real test for Wright as Tito was coming off of a destruction of Mayorga. It's easy to play the hindsight game. Third, Wright has fought at MW for the last few fights. He can't made JMW anymore. So his natural weight is at 160. Fourth, you didn't see the JT fights did you?
he struggled with the tempo against taylor. how will he deal with the hyperactive style tempo that calzaghe will set?
This post is 100% accurate. I wish people could get this through their thick skulls. If you watch those fights its painfully obvious that even though Hopkins lost to Taylor, he is 10 times better.
Avenge a loss? For what? He thinks he won both fights and so do a lot of fans. So why fight a guy who you think you've already beaten twice? The fans know what happened in that fight. The decision is not going to affect how a lot of boxing fans view those fights.
I didn't vote because I didn't like the options. I think Hopkins and Calzaghe just have negotiating issues. Neither man is a coward.
