Before I start...I am not a Calzaghe hater. I am a fan of Joe's and heres why. Firstly Calzaghes is one of the games true sportsman/role models. Hes a handsome intelligent guy. He has adopted the old school "Tin Shed" training methods of Film hero's like rocky etc. He even has the Italian blood. Calzaghe also always comes 100% commited to a fight, he is willing to exchange and initiate the attack as much as any fighter I have seen over the past 15 years. He also has the champions ego......but this is where my accolades stop.. His "EGO" has been built on beating up on by far the worst division in boxing for the past decade, he also has made no attempt to make fights with the "BIG" boys around his weight. He has waited till 36 years of age to pick up pay cheques fighting past their prime HOF guys? isn't that what Hatton gets slagged of for doing. It's also a mark of how weak his division was that he had career defining fights versus "Kessler and Lacy". Do you think genuine greats like Roy Jones, Hopkins would retire happy with those 2 guys on their resume regarded as their best wins....the answer is no. I dont blame Calzaghe for this entirely, I blame Frank Warren for this. He is aware that the British Public are easy to sell a product to, and he has exploited this to the max....do you think Hatton would have fought Mayweather @ 147 in Vegas? the fight would never happen and if Frank did ever contemplate making it he would have Micky Van and Dave Paris officiating it together in Manchester.
before Calzaghe beat them, the whole world recognized that Kessler and Lacy were among the big boys at and around 168
Who cares about these labels?:huh Does saying YES or NO add an inch to his legacy? No! So...who cares?
I would love Calzaghe to fight Pavlik, I sense something very special with Pavlik. If in UK i fancy Calzaghe.....if they fight in US Pavlik.. I think the partisan crowd going crazy when Calzaghe starts throwing wildly helps him.
I think we need to see how Calzaghe's career pans out before we can properly access his greatness. Personally, I'd like to Calzaghe beat Hopkins and then defeat Pavlik for his title. If he achieved that, I'd probably use the word legend to describe an undefeated fighter with Hopkins, Pavlik, and Kessler on his resume.
No, his 9 years of defending a WBO belt, against less than stellar competition, will certainly leave him out of talks of legendary status among boxing historians, I personally feel he needs to make up for lost time by beating Pavlik, Hopkins, and Dawson, then I will be willing to upgrade his status, until then, I dont see anyone other than his biggest fans rating him that high.
I'm going to have to go with.....no. Whats with all the ridiculous Calzaghe threads lately, the posts in this place have really gone downhill.
You can only fight what is around. I am not saying that Calzaghe has had a "I will fight anyone" mentality, but by resume - no, he isn't - but... He has proven, that it would take a legendary fighter to match him - so by that, yes, he is legendary. PS by beating Kessler he became the first to unify at SMW (technically)
I can also name 5 other fighters who would unify the SM division if KEssler was 2nd best. Benn, Collins, Jones, Toney, Nunn, Mcullam (thats six)
