His legacy's been exposed for what it is. Lacy got schooled by a shot roy jones jr who just got his ass handed to him. He got a gift decision by slapping Hopkins all over his body for 12 rounds, and he beat an unproven Kessler who just got his ass handed to him by Ward. Previous to these fights he had fought a bunch of journey men and fighters on the brink of retirement. The only way for Calzaghe to shut me up would be to fight the winner of the super six or any legitimate super middle or light heavy out there.
Im a Calzaghe fan, but Ward destroying Kessler, Jones embarrassing Lacy just to have Jones lose to Danny Green by 1st Round KO...bad year for Calzaghe! That being said, head to head, Calzaghe is a tough one to beat. His ability to adapt and win fights will will never be overshadowed by his currently weakening resume.
Calzaghe must be pissed right now First Kessler gets owned by Ward then RJJ who Calzaghe said wasnt shot when they fought, gets KO by Green. added to all this, Calzaghe was Knock down by this shot RJJ in the first round also messes up his Legacy Next, who knows, Froch wins the super 6: tht wud **** calzaghe off
Well to me, even before Jones and Kessler lost this month, the one fact (and not opinion) about Joe's career that always sticks out is as such: Calzaghe, in his long undefeated career, only fought ONE fighter in the Ring Magazine P4P Top 10. Whether B-Hop was past his prime or not is up for debate (I'd say he was since he was pushing 43 years old and beat a heavy Pavlik moving up in weight for the first time, but that's not the point.). He was Ring P4P Top 10 and 175 world champ. It was a top win. But again, 46-0, a world champion at 168 and then 175 for ELEVEN YEARS, and only ONE challenge against Top 10 P4P in the world competition? And it was a split decision on top of that. That's a damning statement when you compare him to anyone else in the Top 100 ATG. They fought a hell of a lot more than one P4P fighter in their careers. I think he deserves all the credit in the world for beating Kessler. But many other fighters have unified other divisions. For example, O'Neil Bell unified by beating Mormeck at cruiser. Mormeck, like Kessler, was nowhere near the Top 10 P4P however. Therefore, put the Kessler win in perspective. It was a good win, but a great one? So to answer your question, I would say regardless whether or not the Kessler or Jones losses hurt his legacy, I think when his career is long over, the historians will center on the superfights he had, which in my opinion, was only one.
:thumbsup His legacy is built on a win vs Lacy, whom we later found out was the most hyped piece of **** out there. Then he gets greater recognition from fighting/beating an undefeated Kessler, whom also has fought nobodys and just go his ass handed to him by a guy with less then 20 fights. Then he goes on to get greater recognition by fighting an over the hill BHOP and RJJ, both not in their primes. Furthermore, the decision could have been given to BHOP just as easily. So Calzag managed to create a great record and image, without really beating the best or beating them in their primes. Sorry Calzag, you just dont cut it for having much of a legacy of anything noteworthy.
I think Calzaghe could have been good but he never took the risks. He should have closed the gap earlier, he should have fought somebody else instead of Jones.
