It's easy to say that now that Calzaghe completely destroyed him but it sure as hell is not what people were saying before the fight.
For Brits, probably. Considering at the time, Calzaghe was looked at as a hype-job that feasted on lesser fighters, and Lacy was considered a powerhouse monster in the division. Calzaghe made beating him look easy. HE CANT PUNCH SHITE!
Check my first post :good Before the whole drug scenario, Peterson beating Khan was enjoyable. Lamont kept his mouth shut and didn't hunt fame, he came up the roughest of ways and managed to beat a former teenage superstar who had won an Olympic medal and accumulated vast wealth before he hit twenty. Then the whole PED issue reared it's head. atsch Martinez vs Chavez deserves a shout too.
Some people. I was told in the gym before the fight happened, that Lacy was far too top heavy to beat Calzaghe, as he lacked the lateral movement to compete with Joe. Unfortunately, I was 13, and not allowed to bet.
Calzaghe beating down Lacy, is possibly one of the greatest destruction of a hypejob in the last decade, along with Froch -Bute, Hopkins - Pavlik.
And yet was a massive favourite before the fight. 32 out of 33 American boxing writers tipped Lacy to win, so obviously they didn't think he was useless.
Lots of the US boxing media and Gary Shaw in fact just google Calzaghe-Lacy predictions and click on the scene link for a good laugh theres lots of people predicting Lacy to KO Calzaghe in 2 rounds.
Lacy was being hyped like Broner is now as the saviour of US boxing in hindsight its easy to say Lacy was a bum but at the time he was undefeated KOing guys and being megahyped its a shame you cant search the ESB forum further back than 2007.
To this day, I can't remember one fan who thought Lacy was great. With so many bigger stars, he wasn't even on the radar much. That said, Joe Cal laid down an impressive ass whipping on the limited Lacy. Had Joe any power, he would have stopped him. It was dominant. Probably the only time Joe Cal impressed me.
He did but the US boxing media and fans bought into him hook line and sinker.just read the Calzaghe-Lacy predictions on the Scene and Btalk.
American boxing fans were going nuts over Jeff Lacy just as they are now doing with Broner and just as they did 20 years ago with McClellan and Don Curry before that. All ended up getting a severve pasting. That doesn't mean they weren't excellent fighters but everyone is beatable and almost everyone ends up getting beaten.
